  • Patterson leads BU to first ever CAA championship

    pic When Pat Popolizio took over head coaching duties for the Binghamton University wrestling team in 2006, he inherited a program in turmoil. The team went 0-12 in dual meets the season before, and the year preceding that Binghamton didn’t even have a wrestling team. In 2010, the Bearcats are Colonial Athletic Association champions. Tallying 87.5 points, Binghamton won the CAA tournament for the first time ever this past weekend at Rider University. That’s what Binghamton University women’s basketball (11-19, 7-9 America East) will need to say after losing its quarterfinal game in the America East tournament 71-60 to Stony Brook this past Friday night. Binghamton’s quarterfinal loss to the Seawolves started on a high note.   • Van Ingen qualifies for NCAA’s in the mile

    Teams from the Northeast who fail to make the NCAAs head to one location for the annual IC4A and ECAC meets. This past weekend, the Reggie Lewis Center at Boston University stood as the host for both of this season’s meets. The IC4A competition for the men and ECAC for the women contain weekend-long events that require athletes to attain certain qualifying standards to even be allowed to compete.   • Bearcats move to 8-1 in Duals

    Junior Sven Vloedgraven led the way as the Binghamton University men’s tennis team continued its dominance this past weekend, defeating Princeton and St. John’s to improve to 8-1 in dual play this season. With outstanding play all around, the Bearcats are currently ranked No. 3 in the Northeast, according to the ITA. Vloedgraven had another perfect weekend, teaming with sophomore Gilbert Wong at doubles and defeating both of his singles opponents without losing a set.   • Baseball picks up first win of season over Tennessee

    pic Going up against teams from powerhouse conferences SEC and Atlantic Sun Conference, the Binghamton University baseball team had an up-and-down weekend. The Bearcats split two games against the University of Tennessee and were swept by Kennesaw State in the University of Tennessee Tournament. Binghamton (1-6) picked up its first win of the year facing Tennessee (6-5), a member of the SEC which includes Vanderbilt, LSU, Georgia and Ole Miss.     pic After a momentous win to start the season, the Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team hasn’t been able to rediscover the flair that put it over the top, and another slow start dropped the team into a three-game losing skid. The Bearcats (1-3) fell to the Drexel Dragons (3-1) 12-7 on Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. It was Binghamton’s second straight loss on its home turf, which the team will not play on again until March 30 following a three-game road trip.     The Binghamton University women’s tennis team’s seven-game win streak ended on Sunday with a 5-2 loss to Marquette. Binghamton (7-1) lost two three-set matches in singles play, and a tiebreaker at third doubles. The Bearcats’ highlights were fronted by Anna Edelman, as she was the lone Bearcat to win both her singles (6-2, 6-4), and doubles (8-4) matches. The doubles team of Edelman and Marina Bykovskaya is 5-1 so far this season, and is currently ranked an impressive 59 on the ITA national doubles rankings.     pic Binghamton University’s women’s softball team looked to improve their 2-3 record this past weekend at the George Washington Colonial Classic held in Washington D.C. The Bearcats went up against Canisius College, George Washington University and Army in the four-team tournament, finishing 2-2 for the weekend. To begin the first day of the tournament, Binghamton suffered a tough 3-2 loss to Canisius.     After dropping its home opener to the Louisville Cardinals last week, the Binghamton University women’s lacrosse team hosted Big East foe University of Connecticut, hoping to get its first victory. But the Huskies had other plans.
