City and campus to join forces for festival

Binghamton University students and Downtown Binghamton citizens will come together Friday, Sept. 11, for the second annual Communiversity Fest, previously known as Binghamton’s Blowout Block Party.

Kathryn Fletcher, CEO of H2 Innovations, a company that helps local organizations and small businesses get discovered, and a sponsor of Communiversity Fest, believes that these annual festivals will help to remove the supposed division between city and school.

“This is an opportunity for students to explore the opportunities of the city,” Fletcher added.

Over 150 organizations from the University and the city, including Circus Arts Club, will have their own contests and activities. In addition to tables from different student groups, there will be five hours of performances, dances and live bands.

“Last year, this was run by a student think-tank, Catalysts for Intellectual Captial 2020 (CIC2020) and now it is being run by the University, the city of Binghamton, H2 Innovations and Southern Tier Celebrate, a not-for-profit organization,” said Fletcher. “When I was a student last year, I hadn’t planned on staying in the city of Binghamton. I was involved in the [Block Party] event and I ended up staying and now have an office on Court Street.”

The festival will run from 4 to 9 p.m., with free OCCT and Binghamton trolley transportation Downtown.
