The past week proved to be a tough one for the women’s lacrosse team as it managed only one victory in four matches.

The first game was a 21-5 loss to the Marist Red Foxes (5-4). The 21 goals for Marist was the second-highest single-game total in program history and the highest goal output since its 22 points against Howard in 1998. Bearcats sophomore Kara Slowik tied game highs with five ground balls and five caused turnovers.

Binghamton next faced America East rival Albany (5-7) in the home opener for the Bearcats. But they came up short, losing 16-6. Senior Kate Fontana totaled five goals and two assists for the Great Danes while freshman Christine Grueniger, scored four goals. Despite the loss, the Bearcats played stronger in the second half. Senior Danielle Edwards put in a pair of goals while sophomore C.J. Cuneo helped on defense with a total of 10 saves.

The Bearcats seized their first victory of the season in their next game, topping the Niagara Purple Eagles (1-7). The team’s 14 goals were the highest offensive output of the season, led by senior Heather Grose with a team-high three goals and an assist. Danielle Edwards, Kelsey Pieper, Anna Riordan and Julia Demuth had two goals apiece, and junior goalie Sandra Alvarez helped the Bearcats with 13 saves. Binghamton opened with three consecutive goals in the second half before Eagles sophomore Vanessa Schultz led Niagara on a brief run. Trailing 14-7, Niagara scored three goals to narrow the gap to 14-10, but that’s where the scoring ended.

The Bearcats followed their first win by falling 18-3 to UMBC (5-8). Senior Jen Kasper of the UMBC Retrievers had a game-high four goals and two assists, and scored her first goal just 30 seconds into the game; Binghamton allowed 11 goals in the opening minutes of the game. Senior Erika Travis had two points for the Bearcats and Kate Gromatsky added one. Alvarez minded the net for the whole game and recorded 12 saves.

Binghamton is set to play its fifth conference game against Boston University (6-5) on Saturday. The Terriers are third in the conference and will prove a tough opponent to beat for the last-place Bearcats. The next home game is scheduled for Thursday, April 19, against Long Island University.
