NCAA Tournament First Round: Binghamton vs. No. 15 Texas A&M
Binghamton makes the tournament for the fifth time in seven seasons while Texas A&M is in the tournament for the 16th straight year.
Binghamton:
Sven Vloedgraven: The sophomore was voted the America East Player of the Year by the conference coaches yesterday. Vloedgraven has been Binghamton’s No. 1 player this season and he went 7-1 at the top spot late in the season. He won both his singles matches at the AE Championship against Maryland-Baltimore County and Stony Brook. He earned First Team All-Conference honors for the second straight year. Vloedgraven went 26-9 overall and 17-4 in duals.
Arnav Jain: The sophomore was the hero of last year’s AE Championship when he clinched the title on his No. 5 singles win. This year, Jain was dominant in his match against Stony Brook in the finals, taking it 6-1, 6-1 at the fourth singles spot. He avenged a loss to Stony Brook earlier this season when he filled in at the No. 2 singles spot. Jain went 22-12 overall this season at singles.
Moshe Levy: The junior captain finally healed from injuries to join Binghamton last weekend in the AE Championship. His return helped BU reverse the 4-3 loss to Stony Brook and post a 4-1 win in the AE finals. He joined Jain at No. 2 doubles and recorded an 8-3 win to help BU clinch the doubles point. With Levy in the lineup, BU becomes a much deeper team looking forward to the NCAA tournament.
Gilbert Wong: He accumulated an 31-7 overall match record, for best on the team. The freshman was recently named America East Rookie of the Year and was selected to the First Team All-Conference. He was named the AE tournament’s Most Outstanding Player when he clinched the AE title with a 6-3, 7-6 victory at No. 3 singles against Stony Brook.
Texas A&M:
Conor Pollock: The senior leads the Aggies’ lineup at the No. 1 singles spot. He is currently ranked 18th in the country and has reached a ranking as high as 15th this season. He went 24-12 overall this season in singles. Pollock is coming off a tough loss in the Big 12 Championship semi-finals to the 23rd ranked Dimitar Kutrovsky of Texas, 6-4, 7-6.
Austin Krajicek: Krajicek teams up with Pollock on the All-American seventh-ranked doubles team in the country. He claimed one of the two victories against Texas in the Big 12 Championship with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at second singles. Last year, he joined with Pollock to reach the NCAA Doubles Championship semifinals for the first time in Aggie’s history.
Wil Spencer: He went 22-10 this season primarily at No. 3 singles. He was an immediate success as a freshman last season playing at both the second and third singles defeating a handful of nationally ranked opponents. This year he has been much more consistent and is looking to make up for his upset loss to Texas’ Kellen Damico in the Big 12 championship.
Alexey Grigorov: Grigorov picked up one of the Aggie’s two wins in the Big 12 semis, notching a 6-2, 7-6(4) win at No. 4 singles. He went 8-8 this season in singles, but struggled in doubles with two different partners. He had a combined 4-12 doubles record.
