‘Cats win streak snapped at 7

The Binghamton University women’s tennis team’s seven-game win streak ended on Sunday with a 5-2 loss to Marquette. Binghamton (7-1) lost two three-set matches in singles play, and a tiebreaker at third doubles.

The Bearcats’ highlights were fronted by Anna Edelman, as she was the lone Bearcat to win both her singles (6-2, 6-4), and doubles (8-4) matches. The doubles team of Edelman and Marina Bykovskaya is 5-1 so far this season, and is currently ranked an impressive 59 on the ITA national doubles rankings.

Junior Lauren Bates continued to impress with a 6-0, 6-3 victory. She has moved into eighth place on the school’s all-time victory list with the 65th win of her career. Her overall record is now 65-25, putting her one victory ahead of teammate Danyelle Shapiro, whose current record is 64-21.

Marquette was led by Olga Fischer and Kelly Barry, both winning their singles matches in three sets.

Other matches of note included a close match with Gillian Hush of Marquette defeating sophomore Basak Gone 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Binghamton’s third doubles team, consisting of Gone and Yulia Smirnova, also lost a close tiebreaker 9-8 (7-5 in tiebreak).

Marquette lost a tough match to Cornell on Saturday 4-3, but rebounded Sunday. The Golden Eagles will go out West to California during spring break, where they will face San Jose State, San Francisco and Santa Clara over a five-day period.

The Bearcats were last ranked No. 68 according to the ITA national rankings. It is the second straight week the Bearcats have been in the national rankings. The team had never been ranked in school history.

Binghamton is set to face Syracuse University on Friday at 3 p.m.
