Bearcats set to host UMBC, fight for fifth place in AE

After a couple of big road losses, the Binghamton University women’s basketball team will look to regain the magic it left at home more than a week ago. The Bearcats are set to face off against the University of Maryland, Baltimore County at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night in the Events Center. The game can be seen on Time Warner Sports.

Binghamton (8-15, 4-6 America East) just completed a two-game road trip, in which it lost games to Boston University and Stony Brook University, dropping the Bearcats to sixth in the conference. The Bearcats have lost three straight on the road, so they will certainly be looking forward to playing at home again, where they have won three of their last four.

“It’ll be nice to get back home again, and the game is televised as well,” said Binghamton head coach Nicole Scholl.

The Bearcat offense is led by senior Erica Carter, who has averaged 13.8 points per game. Her 3.6 3-pointers made per game not only leads the conference, but is good for fourth in the nation. With six games left in the regular season, she has already set the single-season record for 3-pointers in Bearcat history. Sophomore Andrea Holmes is the conference assist leader with 5.3 a game, and sophomore Viive Rebane is third on America East in offensive rebounding.

At the other end, the Retrievers (10-13) are also 4-6 in conference, but hold a better record overall. UMBC is coming off of a home win against eighth-place University of Maine, but prior to that lost to Stony Brook and first-place Hartford University. UMBC is last in the conference in points allowed and rebounds allowed per game, but is second in assists. The Retriever offense is led by senior guard Carlee Cassidy’s 13.4 points per game, while sophomore Michelle Kurowski is the team leader in rebounds and second in scoring.

The Bearcats have won the last three matchups with the Retrievers, including a 80-63 win last month in Maryland. Carter had a game-high 27 points in that match, including seven 3-pointers. Rebane had 17 points, and Holmes put up 17 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. After going up 30-28 with three minutes left in the first half of that game, the Bearcats went on an 11-0 run to build a double-digit lead for good. That game also came after a two-game losing streak, so BU is hoping for similar results. However, the team knows it won’t be so easy.

“It’s going to be, I’m sure, a completely different game than when we played them down there the last time,” Scholl said. “We shot the ball extremely well down there, and I thought we did a nice job, especially on one of their better players … It’s got to be about us coming out and doing the things that we do well.”

Rebounding could be a key if the Bearcats are to repeat their performance. BU is 0-9 this year when the team is out-rebounded, and the Bearcats had 23 fewer rebounds than their opponents during this most recent losing streak. Binghamton has four players averaging at least five rebounds per game.
