Ellery – “Lying Awake”

When you’re in love, sometimes it feels like each and every interaction you have with your mate produces the most blissfully melodic songs ever to be bestowed upon your ears, and only the two of you can hear it.

However, at other times that feeling can instead produce a sound that is more akin to lackluster acoustic alternative folk music. Such is the case for Tasha and Justin Golden, the husband and wife duo who together comprise Ellery.

Although “Lying Awake” is Ellery’s first nationally distributed album, the Cincinnati based singer/songwriters have been playing together for several years. Ellery was signed by Virt Records, an independent music label, in 2005 after their self-released EP, “Make Your Troubles Mine,” earned them local radio play.

Ellery’s lyrics, while poetic, are at times repetitive and mundane. However, two songs on “Lying Awake” stick out for their uniqueness, tempo and overall quality. “Anna,” which is the first song on the album, is Ellery’s most radio-friendly song.

However, it’s “Some Lovely Story” that highlights Ellery’s most outstanding asset, which are Tasha’s vocals. Tasha has a voice that is reminiscent of Jewel’s, but with the added effect of her Kentucky accent, which at times shines through while she sings, giving certain words a unique alluring sound.

Aside from “Anna” and “Some Lovely Story,” Ellery’s album mostly falls flat. Tasha’s voice is not enough to make up for the soporific effect that Ellery’s music has on a listener. In fact, it may be unsafe to listen to “Lying Awake” while driving.

The song “Be Like This” exemplifies the overriding theme of “Lying Awake,” which is melancholic despondence. There are several songs on the album that seem to be crafted using an exact formula, which quickly becomes redundant.

My recommendation is that if you listen to the album, do so in two- or three-song increments (with plenty of time in between listening sessions). Any more than three songs at a time may require the assistance of Jolt cola, caffeine pills or both.

Ellery’s album release party will be at the Lost Dog Cafe on May 4, at 9:30 p.m.
