A Binghamton University student’s car was stolen at gunpoint on Chapin Street on Monday, according to reports from the Press & Sun-Bulletin.

According to the report, Binghamton detectives arrested Manuel Rodriguez, 38, of Oak Street Tuesday night. He was charged with one felony count of first-degree robbery.

The student was getting out of a gray 2008 Nissan Sentra at noon when she was approached by Rodriguez, the report states. It also states that he held a gun to her and ordered that she get in the passenger seat.

Rodriguez then drove to Front Street and dropped the student off at the Broome County Health Department, police said.

During a search of Rodriguez’s Oak Street home police found a pellet gun, according to the report, which they believe he used in the robbery.

Tuesday morning the stolen car was found in the Town of Fenton. The Nissan was undamaged.

Rodriguez was set to be arraigned Wednesday morning in Binghamton City Court.

University spokeswoman Gail Glover said that school officials were aware of the incident.

“We are increasingly concerned with the safety of our students in Binghamton and plan to follow up with city officials to see what we can do to address those concerns,” she said.
