Animals + Beer = Your Saturday?

School’s been in session for about a month now. The party scene may be losing its luster, so why not spice up your Saturday with a pumpkin spice beer?

On Sept. 20, the Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park will be holding their sixth annual Zoo Brew, a beer tasting with seasonal beers from about 15 local breweries.

Douglas Weeks, the special events coordinator for Ross Park, said they try and have a variety.

“We try to get the smaller [beers] that people haven’t heard about,” Weeks said. “Stuff you couldn’t get in your local grocery store.”

The event, which starts at 4 p.m., will also serve barbeque food such as hot dogs and sausages.

While the zoo is hopping with beer and Bearcats, educators will be showing and talking about some of the zoo’s animals. On hand will be skunks, owls and the zoo’s most recent edition, Benjamin the bearcat.

Also on display will be animal artwork, created by animals such as the binturong by walking through paint and then onto canvas. These pieces have been on display at First Friday and will be available for sale in the gift shop after this event.

Tickets can be purchased in advance, with a cost of $25 for members, $30 for non-members or $10 for designated drivers. Prices are $5 more if purchased the day of the event. Cost includes 20 tickets, good for one tasting each, and unlimited food. Designated drivers’ tickets only cover the cost of food.

All proceeds will go to support the zoo’s various projects, including their Animal Enrichment Program, and building projects, including a new exhibit which will begin construction next month. The space will house the zoo’s new editions, including red pandas, a snow leopard and meerkats. Additional donations will also be accepted.
