Things may not always be what they seem.

That was the case at this past weekend’s women’s lacrosse season opener where Binghamton University lost 21-9 at William and Mary. Although the team had a tough loss to start off the season, there is plenty of optimism in the air.

The Bearcats (0-1) were led by freshman Lisa Illig, who had three goals in her collegiate debut, two in the first half and one unassisted in the second. Her two goals in the first half were assisted by fellow freshman Ali Castiglie. Castiglie also scored her own unassisted goal in the second half, giving her three points on the game. Castiglie and Illig represented two of the seven starting freshman for the squad.

The class of 2011 accumulated seven goals and two assists in their premier, impressing new head coach, Tony Zostant.

“We received some strong performances from our freshmen,” Zostant said in a press release after the game. “They fared well in their first collegiate action.”

The strong freshmen core were not the only contributors, as senior captain Leanne Musso scored her first goal of the season. Musso’s goal showed the coaching staff and the team that they can get production from the newcomers as well as the veterans.

Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Scott made 10 saves in her debut.

Binghamton’s next game will be their home opener at the Bearcats Sports Complex this Friday at 4 p.m. against Colgate.
