Binghamton University’s men’s wrestling team continues to struggle as two more losses push the team’s losing streak to five.

With losses in seven of their last eight games, the team’s overall record now stands at 9-12 and 1-4 in conference play.

The weekend’s losses were disheartening to the team, as it continued to flash only brief displays of what may be yet to come. Saturday’s 26-21 loss to George Mason University provided many reasons to remain optimistic.

Josh Patterson, the team’s sensational junior, continued to excel, recording his 17th pin of the season and tying a school record set by former Bearcat Greg Geisenhoff in the 1987-88 season. With eight matches remaining for the No. 8-ranked wrestler, Patterson raised his record to 32-4 overall and 18-2 in duals.

As sophomore Matt Kaylor notched his 23rd win of the season at the 149-pound weight class, Anwar Goeres, the 141-pound redshirt sophomore and Justin Lister, the 157-pound redshirt freshmen provided the other two wins for the Bearcats.

On Sunday, the team traveled from Virginia to Washington, D.C. to take on the American University Eagles. The Eagles, winners of their last three matches heading into Sunday’s match, extended their own streak, while handing the Bearcats their fifth straight defeat, 27-8.

The Bearcats faced a tough opponent, featuring two wrestlers ranked within the top 12., No. 3-ranked and undefeated Mike Cannon and No. 12 Kyle Borshoff who improved to 20-3.

Patterson, Binghamton’s own superstar, continued his dominance, recording his 33rd win and improving to 33-4 overall and 19-2 in duals.

The Bearcats’ only other win came from 125-pound sophomore Tyler Malmberg. In the first match of the day, Malmberg defeated Thomas Williams, 7-3.

Following Malmberg’s victory were six straight wins for the Eagles.

Goeres, who won his previous match against George Mason, continued his play even though he was unable to record a victory. He forced his counterpart, Matt Mariacher, to two tie-breaker periods before Mariacher, a former New York State Champion, escaped with a 6-5 victory.

Kaylor had his hands full with Borshoff, falling 17-3.

The team looks to improve upon its record next week as they travel to Clifton Park, N.Y., to take on conference opponent Boston University and Division III Lycoming College.

The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
