Usually the home to events such as “Disney on Ice” and Binghamton Senators ice hockey games, the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena featured quite a different atmosphere last Tuesday night.

Enthusiastic fans of all ages quickly spilled into the packed arena, eagerly scrambling to find good seats. As most adults and children opted to sit in the stadium, young teens rushed to the large mosh pit area located in front of the stage.

Fans went wild as opener Shinedown took the stage, causing concert-goers who were sitting in the stadium to look relieved. Members of the audience pumped their fists in the air and jumped up and down as Shinedown played its more popular songs, “Second Chance” and “If You Only Knew.”

After playing an hour-and-a-half-long set, many left the stadium, showing no interest in staying for the rest of the show. However, as it neared 10 p.m., bursts of fans piled into the arena, confirming why such a large venue had been selected.

Suddenly, the lights dimmed and a huge florescent backdrop lit the stage, revealing all four members of Papa Roach.

Each band member was uniformly dressed, sporting black leather vests, tight skinny jeans and tattooed arms.

“I want to see you motherfuckers jumping!” lead singer Jacoby Shaddix screamed.

From the beginning of the set until the very last note, Papa Roach rocked the house with a refreshing sense of energy and enthusiasm that is rare to find at concerts today. Shaddix constantly addressed the audience, thanking them for their support and giving fans high-fives. Toward the end of the show, the band even held a moment of silence for the Binghamton University professor who tragically passed away.

Showcasing its hit album “Metamorphosis,” released earlier this year, Papa Roach played many new songs, including “Hollywood Whore” and “Lifeline.”

Veterans of the heavy metal scene, these hard rockers have been making music for over a decade and have produced six full-length albums. Boasting music that combines alternative rock, metal and pop punk, Papa Roach has a truly unique style and sound.

As the show continued, fans danced, formed mosh pits and crowd-surfed their way up to the stage. Suddenly, a familiar tune began to play, revealing Papa Roach’s hit song “Scars.”

“If you’ve got demons inside or something making you crazy, then tonight is the night to let it out!” the lead singer screamed.

Spunky and unpredictable, Jacoby Shaddix shocked fans when he jumped off the stage mid-song. Concert-goers were in awe as Shaddix climbed the stadium stairs and ran through the bleachers, slapping audience members’ hands as he continued to sing.

Just when fans thought the show couldn’t get any better, Shaddix shouted, “Are you guys ready for some old school?”

Fans were taken through a decade of Papa Roach as the band played several popular old songs, including “Broken Home” and “Between Angels and Insects.”

“We are going to take you back to the song that started it all!” Shaddix screamed.

Papa Roach immediately broke out into its first hit single, “Last Resort.” As the song played, every audience member stood up and sang along. Hypnotized by the music, fans did not move until the house lights flicked on and Papa Roach left the stage.

Papa Roach’s wild performance and constant energy meant that boredom was not an option for audience members, and given the combination of its wonderful stage presence and incredible live sound, it is no surprise that Papa Roach has been popular for so many years.
