The Undergrounds hosted a special Binghamton Underground Music Presents (BUMP) show Saturday featuring the one-of-a-kind indie band, Xiu Xiu.

The music event attracted not only Binghamton University students, but people from surrounding areas as well to experience the unique sounds of the band.

According to Rachel Leigh Casey, chair of BUMP, some even drove up to three hours to see the band perform.

‘It’s a huge deal Xiu Xiu is playing for free, because most of their tickets can be anywhere from 20 to 30 dollars,’ Casey explained.

Students were thrilled the concert was so easily accessible, since the band is extremely popular within the indie world. With eight years and 10 albums under its belt, Xiu Xiu has an extensive history of music with a creative twist not found in other bands.

The band’s unique aspect is what fans like most about Xiu Xiu, whose musical sounds are so different that its genre is tough to pinpoint. The band’s instruments include a guitar played by front man Jamie Stewart, and percussion such as cymbals, tambourines, gongs and a synthesizer played by Angela Seo. The synthesizer includes drum beats and sounds effects such as bells and whistles.

Eager fans gathered to see Xiu Xiu perform, along with local bands Beach Babies and Forest Fire opening the stage.

The preshow helped fans like Mike Sica-Lieber, a junior majoring in philosophy, to get pumped for Xiu Xiu.

‘I love finding new music, and I’m really excited to see Xiu Xiu,’ Sica-Lieber said.

Students clapped and cheered with enthusiasm after every song as they absorbed every unique chord and sound of Xiu Xiu.

Josh Gillespie, a BU graduate student, has been a fan of the band for a while.

‘I really like the show,’ he said. ‘It’s intense, and he’s passionate about what he’s doing.’
