In closing out its fall season, the Binghamton University women’s tennis team saw two of its top singles players advance in the ITA Eastern Regional event at New Haven, Conn.

Sophomore Jillian Santos advanced to the round of 16 at the event after defeating Boston University’s Monica Mical, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round and made a comeback to defeat Yale’s Elizabeth Epstein, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the third round. Santos had received a first round bye. Santos lost in the fourth round of play to Hillary Barlett of Princeton, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

Junior Lauren Bates also received a first round bye and then went on to narrowly defeat Stony Brook’s Prerana Appincni, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, in the second round. But Bates lost to Boston College’s Katarina Gajic, 6-3, 0-6, 1-6, in the third round.

As partners, Santos and Bates played doubles together and made it to the third round after defeating Depaoli and Rodin of the University of Pennsylvania, 8-3, and then Columbia’s Christenson and Markarova, 8-2. However, in the third round Santos and Bates fell to Dartmouth’s Scott and Winingham, 6-8.

Sophomore Marina Bykovskaya also participated and defeated Amanda Palikunnell of St. Bonaventure, 6-3, 6-1, in the qualifying round before falling to Colombia’s Natasha Makarova, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, in the first round of play. Junior Yulia Smirnova defeated Harvard’s Alexandra Lehman 6-1, 6-2, in the first round. Smirnova was defeated in the second round by Fairleigh Dickinson’s Elmine Botes, 6-4, 6-2.

Smirnova and Bykovskaya also paired up in doubles play, but fell in the first round of play to Boston College’s duo of freshmen Olga Khmylev and Alex Kelleher, 8-6.

While this event closes out their fall season, the team will gear up for their January Winter Invitational at Cornell.
