Binghamton University’s men’s tennis team went to Virginia with a chance to give themselves an undefeated month of March. However, Old Dominion (15-11) was not about to cooperate.

The Bearcats (11-4, 1-0 AE) lost to the 72nd-ranked Monarchs, 4-3, and had their five-match win streak snapped. During their streak, the Bearcats went 28-7 overall in their matches. Old Dominion started the match strong by taking the doubles point. The schools then split the six singles points, leading to the 4-3 win for the Monarchs.

The Monarchs won at first, second and sixth singles, all in straight sets. Old Dominion’s duo of senior Aleksandr Seleznev and sophomore Tobias Fanselow continue to account for much of the Monarchs’ exceptional season. Seleznev and Fanselow are currently the 33rd-ranked doubles team in the nation. While the two did not team up together on Saturday, they each picked up wins over Binghamton’s top singles players, Moshe Levy and Sven Vloedgraven. Seleznov won 6-2, 6-2, while Fanselow was victorious by scores of 6-2, 6-1. Krzyzstov Muzalewski scored the win for the Monarchs at sixth singles over the Bearcats’ Rafael Rodrigues, 6-3, 6-2.

Sven Vloedgraven, whose performance last weekend earned him America East Male Tennis Performer of the Week honors, saw his win streak stopped at six. The sophomore is posed to improve on his exceptional freshman year and his standing as a second-team All-Conference member.

Standout freshman Gilbert Wong continued his outstanding play, winning at third singles (6-4, 1-6, 6-4), and he teamed up with Vloedgraven to pick up a win at second doubles, 8-7 (4).

On Sunday the Bearcats headed to Georgetown to take on the 3-16 Hoyas. With both teams coming off of disappointing losses, the Bearcats came out strong, taking five of six singles matches, and sweeping doubles to take the match, 6-1.

With Levy resting, Vloedgraven filled in admirably, defeating Georgetown’s top player, David Tillem, 6-3, 6-1.

Wong continued his strong play, and he improved his record to a team-best, 27-6. Sophomore Arnav Jain picked up his 20th victory of the season, defeating Adam Gross, 6-0, 6-2, at third singles.

Binghamton has now won six of its past seven matches. The Bearcats were originally scheduled to do battle with Marist on April 2, but that match has since been postponed.
