The Binghamton University men’s tennis team just won’t lose.

The Bearcats set the school record for wins in a season, and stretched their record winning streak to 17, with four wins this weekend. BU defeated America East rivals University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Boston University, along with knocking off Fairleigh Dickinson University and Temple. In back-to-back days, the Bearcats won 26 of 28 possible points and continued their dominance over teams from the Northeast, improving to 22-1 on the year.

The Bearcats defeated Boston University 7-0 and Temple 6-1 on Sunday, and defeated UMBC 6-1 and FDU 7-0 on Saturday.

“We just continue to look one match at a time, and remember to not overlook anyone,” Binghamton head coach Adam Cohen said. “This speaks to how far we have been able to bring the program.”

The last time Binghamton had a men’s tennis team that won at least 21 games was back in 2004-05. Back then the Bearcats went 21-6 en route to winning the America East and appearing in the NCAA Division I tournament.

“Winning brings confidence,” Cohen said. “We know that we are a good team, and we have been battle-tested. We know if someone is going to beat us, they will have to have a pretty good day against us.”

Last year, the Bearcats went 14-8 en route to becoming America East champions and making a tournament appearance, but this year they have entered the elite group of schools, and are ranked No. 52 in the nation.

“We brought back everyone, and everyone is now a year better,” Cohen said. “We also brought in two new guys. When I was making the schedule, I knew this team had the chance to be special.”

This weekend, junior Sven Vloedgraven won four times to raise his overall record to 35-8, and 20-3 in duals. Sophomore Gilbert Wong also won four times and improved to 32-7 overall and 20-1 in duals. The two have been dynamic all year long at first doubles, winning three times this weekend and improving to 26-8 overall and 18-4 in duals.

Junior Arnav Jain picked up three wins and is now a team-best 32-3 overall, with a perfect 21-0 record in duals.

Senior Moshe Levy, who is heading down the final stretch of a great career at BU, also won three times.

“Moshe has had a good career here,” Cohen said. “He certainly would have liked to have been more healthy, but I think that right now he is playing some of his best tennis for us. He has been a tremendous leader on and off the court, doing very well in school. He has been a great example, and having been here with me in the beginning, he definitely takes pride in what the program has been able to accomplish in four years. We went from finishing third in the America East, to winning two in a row, and hopefully a third, as well as putting ourselves in the national rankings.”

The team’s other players have rotated in the remaining two singles positions, and this weekend the Bearcats played five different people: Alexandre Haggai, Ruben Devos, Bastian Bornkessel, Rafael Rodrigues and Andreas Danielsson, all at the No. 5 and 6 spots.

“I want to keep the guys fresh,” Cohen said. “We are a deep team with a lot of talented players.”

The team’s final regular-season matches will take place next weekend. The Bearcats are set to host America East opponents Stony Brook and Hartford.
