After a seventh-place finish on day one, the Binghamton University golf team climbed the leaderboard on Sunday to secure third place at this weekend’s Big 5 Invitational, hosted by Temple University. BU concluded the 19-team event with a two-round total of 612. Junior Bryce Edmister shot a 73 in the final round to finish as runner-up behind Temple freshman Brandon Matthews. University of Hartford won the event, which took place at the Philmont Country Club in Huntingdon Valley, Pa.

Binghamton head coach Bernie Herceg said he was impressed with Edmister’s ability to cope with the challenges that the course presented.

“It was a very difficult course and the scores attested to that,” Herceg said. “Bryce was very consistent and played smart throughout the tournament. Overall, it was a great performance.”

Sophomore Josh Holling also played well over the course of the two-day event, shooting 76 and 75 on Day 1 and Day 2, respectively. Holling finished the event tied for 10th, marking his fourth top-10 finish of the season. He has earned two top-5 finishes during the 2012 campaign.

Sophomore Jack Sedgewick, senior David Cellura and freshman Brandon Smith rounded out the scoring for the Bearcats, who, as a team, have posted a top-10 finish in all five events this season.

Binghamton is scheduled to conclude its season on Oct. 22 and 23 at the Bruce Williams Memorial, which will be hosted by St. Mary’s University in Texas.
