The Bearcats’ losing streak may have come to an end, but their recent success at home will be put to the test on Saturday as the Bearcats host defending conference champion University of Vermont. They will then go to the state capital for a Presidents’ Day matchup with the University at Albany.

Binghamton University (9-15, 5-6 America East) is fourth in the conference, coming off a 34-point home win on Wednesday against sixth-place University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The victory was the Bearcats’ third straight at home and broke a two-game losing streak overall.

Although BU is 4-2 at home and coming off their best defensive performance of the season, the team will face a challenge trying to stop the conference’s No. 1 offense in Vermont (20-5, 10-2 AE), which is putting up 70 points per game this year in conference games. Vermont’s two losses this year have come against first-place University of Hartford and third-place Boston University, and the team has outscored its opponents by an average of 17.6 points. Vermont is currently riding a four-game win streak, including a 18-point win over Boston University on Wednesday. The Bearcats and Wildcats are the top two teams in the conference in 3-point shooting percentage, and two of the top three teams in 3-point defense.

The last time the two teams squared off, Vermont dealt Binghamton its worst loss of the season with a 76-43 final score. Vermont was No. 24 in the nation at the time and hit 10 3-pointers during the game. It was the Bearcats’ worst scoring output in conference this year. Sophomore Orla O’Reilly led the team with 13 points, and senior Theodora Panteli had 13 rebounds in the loss.

After taking on Vermont, the Bearcats will travel to Albany for a Monday night matchup. The Great Danes (8-15, 1-9 AE) are currently last in conference, though they are coming off their sole conference win of the year with an overtime win against Stony Brook University. On the year, though, Albany has been outscored by nearly 12 points per game in conference.

This is the second time the teams have played one another this year, with their first matchup coming just two weeks ago in Vestal. The Bearcats pulled out a five-point win, leading by no more than six points in the final five minutes. BU was able to hold down the Albany offense by running a zone defense for nearly the entire game, hoping to limit the Great Dane interior scoring. The team’s single second-half turnover was another key to the victory.

Senior Erica Carter, the Bearcats’ offensive leader, said after the game that the team’s mentality was a big component to beating what she considered to be an underrated team.

“[We] try to forget about that record,” Carter said. “They are a good team; a lot of their losses haven’t been by a lot [of points]. So basically just forget about the record, go in and play hard.”

Binghamton’s game against Vermont is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday in the Events Center, while the matchup with Albany is set for 7 p.m. Sunday in Albany.
