Locked in another nightmare of a season, the Binghamton University softball team dropped its 10th game in a row, falling last Wednesday to Maryland-Baltimre County, 6-1.

Binghamton (5-30, 0-15 America East) has not won in conference this season and the trend continued as they were stymied by UMBC sophomore Stephanie Weigman. Weigman threw a two-hitter, giving up only one run in a complete game. She now holds a 20-12 record this season and used a variety of pitches to strike out 11 Binghamton batters. She currently ranks first in the America East in strikeouts with 253. Her 20 wins are also tops in the conference.

UMBC began the scoring immediately in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run hit by Amanda Fefel. In the second, leadoff hitter Lauren Brummell hit a two-RBI single into left field to extend to a 4-0 lead.

Binghamton’s only run came off a solo shot into deep center field from sophomore Deannie Plemon in the bottom of the fourth. It was the Bearcats’ second and final hit of the game. It was Plemon’s second long ball of the season.

UMBC added two more runs in the sixth inning when Amanda Page hit a two-run home run into left field to extend the lead and set the final margin to 6-1.

For BU, junior Cyrilla Suker pitched all seven innings giving up six runs on six hits and striking out eight in the loss.

It was a week of milestones for the Bearcats this week, however, as senior centerfielder Sandy Meadows moved into sole possession of fourth place on Binghamton’s Division I career hits list with 115 and Suker moved into second on the school’s career Division I strikeout list with 327.

Next, the Bearcats travel to Hartford for a Saturday doubleheader against the Hawks (16-18, 7-6 AE). The team will then finish up the three-game series on Sunday in a late morning affair.

The Hawks’ best hitter, senior outfielder Amanda Sais, is currently batting .327 and leads the team in home runs with five. Junior catcher Ann Kyzer leads the team with 23 RBIs.

Defensively, Hartford is led by junior pitcher Brittney Stratton, who has compiled a 12-8 record thus far for the season. She has a 1.96 ERA, good enough for sixth in the America East. She is also fifth in the conference in strikeouts, with 123.

The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, while the Sunday showdown is set for 11 a.m.
