The Binghamton University women’s lacrosse team got its first win of the season on Wednesday, routing the Bucknell University Bison 18-7. This was the team’s first win since April 8, 2009 when it narrowly beat Le Moyne College, 12-11.

Binghamton hit the ground running with junior Beth Moore scoring in the first 30 seconds of the first half; she would go on to score three more during the game. The Bearcats looked very aggressive offensively, starting the game by scoring four goals in the first five minutes of the half, stunning the Bison defense. The defense looked equally balanced and sound, stopping any Bison player from scoring. The Bearcats outshot Bucknell 16-6 in the first half.

After holding the Bison scoreless for almost half a period, the Bison got on the board, making the score 7-1. Even with the comfortable lead, the Bearcats continued to attack, scoring two goals less than 15 seconds apart. One was made by freshman Kristen Stone, followed up by another from classmate Lindsay Angelillo. Both Bearcats would go on to net a goal apiece. By the end of the half, the Bearcats were up 12-2, their biggest lead of the season.

Bucknell scored on its first possession almost 30 seconds into the second half, and again three minutes later. But the Bearcats remained unfazed, outscoring Bucknell 6-5 in the second half to seal the 11-goal win, their biggest this season.

Junior goalkeeper Emily Miller made 10 saves, and the Bearcats outshot their opponent 32-22.

Freshman Kimberly McGeever netted three goals while classmate Katherine Hunsberger and sophomore Liz Zuern chipped in one goal apiece. Seven different Bearcats scored during the game.

America East play has not been kind to the Bearcats this year. The Bearcats were narrowly defeated 11-8 by Boston University, which ranks 13th in the nation.

“I’m really proud of the way we played today against a ranked team,” Binghamton head coach Tony Zostant said, according to a Binghamton University press release.

The Bearcats had a 5-2 lead going into the second half, but Boston rallied to outscore Binghamton 9-3 in the second half. The loss against Albany was a different story. The Bearcats were outshot 39-3 as they fell to the Danes 24-3.

The Bearcats have not won a conference game in four years. “We will learn from each game,” said Zostant according to a Binghamton University press release. “We played well but parts of the game are still missing.”

The Bearcats will be on the road again this Saturday to face conference rival Vermont, who is also struggling this year. The Catamounts hold an overall record this year of 2-8 and a conference record of 0-3. The last time the Bearcats faced the Catamounts, Vermont narrowly defeated Binghamton 13-9. Faceoff is set for noon on Saturday.
