A surprisingly strong semester of swimming came to an end Saturday in Ithaca. The Binghamton University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, however, took a loss to Cornell to polish off the fall season. The men fell 128-163 and the women took a 124-165 decision.
Picking up wins for the men were junior Jason Chen and sophomore Joe Perez-Rogers. Chen took the 200-yard free with a time of 1:44.68 and the 100-yard fly (51.99). Perez-Rogers swam away with the 100 back in a time of 51.75. Also picking up a win was freshman Andrew Ellman, who won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.02.
A 200-yard free relay team that took the 200-yard medley last week came through victorious again against Cornell. The team of Chen, Perez-Rogers and freshmen David Gleason and Tim Cabasino touched first in a time of 1:25.83.
Bearcat Sophomore Nolan Slesnick finished second in the 1000-yard free, nearly beating the winning time of 9:55.70 with his own time of 9:56.16. Fellow sophomore, diver Nick Turner, placed second on the 1-meter (262.87) and fourth on the 3-meter (259.20).
On the women’s side, junior Amanda Ciccone took the 100 free with a time of 52:44 and the 100 fly (58.22). Ciccone, along with fellow junior Lyndsi Worthington and seniors Rita Brodfuerher and Allyce Brand, took second in the 200 medley relay (1:49.13).
Sophomore Maria Mazzoni picked up a victory in the 500 free (5:23:98). On the boards, teammate Morgan Neal placed fourth on the both the 3-meter (183.37) and the 1-meter (186.37).
“We had some really solid performances today,” head coach Sean Clark said in a Binghamton University press release. “I’m pretty happy with our effort today we were reasonably competitive, although Cornell was obviously the stronger program.”
The Bearcats head to Florida for training over the break then hit the waters competitively again on Jan. 16 at St. Bonaventure.
