The Binghamton women’s lacrosse team opened its 2026 season on Friday, falling to hosts Marist 10-6. After a four-goal run in the second quarter gave the Bearcats an early 4-3 lead, their offensive output slowed significantly and they were outscored 7-3 the rest of the match while converting just one of their eight free-position shots.
Binghamton (0-1) quickly made its presence known after winning the initial draw control, with senior attack Emma Blloshmi rattling off a close-range shot that was saved by the Marist (1-0) net-minder. The Bearcats continued to apply pressure, attempting a pair of shots on their following possession before earning a free-position attempt. After sophomore attack Leah Kaufer’s free-position shot was saved, the Red Foxes got through the Bearcat backline, breaking the ice with the first score of the match.
Binghamton’s next chance on goal came from another close-range Blloshmi shot, but Marist’s goalkeeper got a stick on it once more. The Red Foxes capitalized on a free-position opportunity on the following possession to take a 2-0 lead. Despite a few looks on the net for both the Bearcats and Red Foxes, neither squad found twine for the remainder of the period.
Marist picked up the second quarter where it left off, building its lead to 3-0 just 13 seconds into the period. After winning the ensuing draw control, Binghamton began to find its stride, as sophomore midfielder Anthea Hayslip found sophomore midfielder Christina Lauro on the edge of the crease for the first Bearcat score of the season. Freshman midfielder Sabrina Boyle then drove toward the net, burying her shot between the goalkeeper’s legs to make it 3-2.
After yet another draw control victory, the Bearcats earned a free-position attempt that junior midfielder Mia Forte buried in twine to tie the match. Binghamton’s dominant offensive run continued after another draw control as senior attack Jess Robinson found a driving Blloshmi, giving the Bearcats their first lead of the match. However, the Bearcat run came to an end upon losing the next draw control, as the Red Foxes quickly tied the match. Marist held the Bearcats scoreless through the remainder of the half while adding another pair of scores to take a 6-4 lead.
The Bearcats quickly got back on the board to open the third quarter, taking advantage of a man-up opportunity as Blloshmi found Robinson, who buried her shot in the back of the net. Marist, however, did not allow the Bearcats to get within striking distance, scoring on consecutive possessions to go ahead 8-5. A pair of turnovers ended the Bearcats’ next two possessions and the Red Foxes capitalized once more, scoring another two goals on consecutive possessions and claiming a daunting 10-5 advantage.
With under three minutes in the period, the Bearcats earned a free-position opportunity, but the shot missed wide and the Bearcats failed to find twine for the rest of the third quarter. Throughout the period, the Bearcats surrendered nine shots on goal while only attempting one of their own.
The first score of the fourth quarter came courtesy of senior attack Carla Curth with less than four minutes in the match, cutting the Bearcat deficit to four. Binghamton’s attempted comeback was stifled by a turnover on its following possession and a last-second shot was saved by the Red Foxes. Despite holding the Red Foxes scoreless in the final 22 minutes of the match, the Bearcats did not find twine again, falling to Marist 10-6.
Binghamton will continue its season-opening homestead against Siena on Friday, Feb. 13. First draw control is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestal, New York.
