Freshman Kate Tesi led the Binghamton University women’s lacrosse team with three points in a 16-7 loss at Monmouth last Sunday.
All three of Tesi’s points were goals, including the first overall score of the game. After Tesi’s first goal, Monmouth outscored the Bearcats 9-3 before the half. In that first half of play, the Hawks outshot Binghamton 20-8.
“We had a lot of trouble with possession,” said BU captain Kara Slowik.
Binghamton ended up being outshot by 15, a statistic that was not helped by 17 turnovers.
“We didn’t come out as intense as we needed to … everybody is pretty upset about the loss,” said BU captain Kelsey Pieper.
There could be positivity found within the lopsided loss. Binghamton sophomore defender Christina Smith made a halftime adjustment in covering Monmouth’s Megan Nutter. Nutter tallied five goals in the first half of play, but was held to just one in the second half. Additionally, Binghamton senior captain Leanne Musso connected on two second-half goals which gave her a point in each of her last eight games, dating back to last season. Musso, who holds the eighth and ninth spots on the Binghamton single-season scoring list, will surely look to add her name to the list for a third time.
Binghamton returns home Wednesday, where it will host the Siena Saints at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Both Bearcat wins have come at home this season.
“I am extremely looking forward to playing at home,” Pieper said. “We’re looking forward to playing [Siena] and crushing them.”
The intensity will be up for this game. Slowik added that the whole team knows that it is a must win.
The aggression won’t be new to Siena as the Saints are coming off a loss to Albany in which 57 fouls were committed, 39 by Albany, one less than the total number of fouls in the Binghamton and Monmouth game.
Face-off is set for 6 p.m.
