The NHL’s team power rankings have changed a bit since we’ve spoken last. There is a new No. 1. A few teams have made some big moves up toward the top and a few teams just don’t look like their former selves. So there’s no confusion, the teams’ previous rankings follow their new ones. With no further ado, here is this week’s edition of the power rankings.

1. (3) San Jose Sharks (22-3-2) — The Sharks are 14-0-2 at home so far this season. What’s more impressive is that they’ve been winning even without Evgeni Nabakov in net.

2. (2) Detroit Red Wings (18-4-4) — It’s easy to achieve this kind of record when your power play is scoring at a ridiculous 30.2 percent.

3. (11) Boston Bruins (18-4-4) — The Bruins have surrendered a league-low 56 goals in 26 games; Tim Thomas’ .942 save percentage has contributed to that.

4. (7) Pittsburgh Penguins (15-7-4) — Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby have a combined 83 points so far this season and are +27.

5. (17) Philadelphia Flyers (13-7-6) — Simon Gagne is tied for fourth in the league with 32 points and Jeff Carter is tied for first with 19 goals.

6. (5) Montreal Canadiens (15-6-5) — The Canadiens will have all six starting spots for this year’s All-Star Game, which is being held in Montreal … surprise, surprise.

7. (16) Chicago Blackhawks (12-6-7) — The Winter Classic at Wrigley Field is going to be a lot of fun to watch, especially since the Hawks are 8-1-4 at home this season.

8. (8) New Jersey Devils (14-8-2) — No Marty Brodeur, no playoffs? Not from the looks of things. The Devils are 7-1 in their last eight games.

9. (4) New York Rangers (18-10-2) — Henrik Lundqvist is in fine form and leads the NHL with 16 wins. But still, five of their last six wins have come in the shootout, something that won’t be around come playoffs.

10. (10) Washington Capitals (15-10-3) — Alexander Ovechkin has 20 points in Alexander Semin’s 12-game absence, but the Caps are 5-6-1.

11. (12) Anaheim Ducks (15-10-3) — J.S. Giguere is only 8-7-2, while Jonas Hiller is 6-3-1 with an astounding .933 save percentage and two shutouts. If “Jiggy” isn’t careful, he might not be the starter much longer.

12. (6) Minnesota Wild (15-10-1) — Goalie Niklas Backstrom is 14-8-1 with a .925 save percentage and has started all but three games so far this season. Those are Vezina-like numbers.

13. (20) Vancouver Canucks (15-10-3) — Roberto Luongo is destroying the competition with five shutouts already; that includes a Vancouver franchise-record shutout streak that lasted 242 minutes and 36 seconds. The only problem is that he hasn’t played since Nov. 22 due to a groin injury.

14. (9) Calgary Flames (16-10-1) — The Flames have 80 goals for and 80 goals against, and yet they are still tied for the lead of the Northwest division.

15. (19) Nashville Predators (14-10-2) — After an injury-plagued 2007-08 season, Shea Weber has exploded for 25 points in 26 games. There could be a Norris Trophy in his future.

16. (1) Buffalo Sabres (12-11-3) — Even though Thomas Vanek is tied for the league lead in goals (19), the Sabres are just 4-9-1 in their last 14 games.

17. (15) Carolina Hurricanes (13-12-3) — It’s just a matter of time before this team begins to slide down the standings. Eric Staal has just 16 points in 28 games, even after signing that seven-year, $57.75 million contract extension.

18. (18) Edmonton Oilers (13-11-2) — Edmonton is over .500 even though they are being outscored, 78-74; maybe the goal issue can be attributed to playing 14 of their first 19 games on the road.

19. (14) Colorado Avalanche (13-13-1) — Joe Sakic was on pace for a pretty nice season, but will be out for the next six weeks with a herniated disc in his back.

20. (21) Ottawa Senators (10-10-4) — The Pizza Line of Daniel Alfredsson, Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza has accounted for 47.3 percent of the team’s scoring.

21. (25) Los Angeles Kings (11-11-4) — The Kings are struggling to score goals, and they’re also having trouble picking a starting goalie.

22. (13) St. Louis Blues (11-11-3) — Without Paul Kariya in the lineup, the Blues have just two wins in regulation, and with leading scorer Andy McDonald out another six weeks with a broken leg, times will not get any easier in St. Louis.

23. (27) Phoenix Coyotes (12-13-2) — The Coyotes are 4-7-2 in their last 13 games, which includes a recent 7-1 loss at the talons of the Blackhawks.

24. (23) Dallas Stars (10-12-4) — Marty Turco’s stats from last season: 32-21-6, 2.31 GAA and a .909 save percentage. Turco’s stats so far this season: 9-11-4, 3.38 GAA and a .876 save percentage. Enough said.

25. (24) Florida Panthers (11-12-3) — Their leading scorer has a mere 15 points. Bad news.

26. (29) Columbus Blue Jackets (11-13-3) — The Blue Jackets are lucky that they’re not at the bottom of the standings with the league’s worst power play, scoring at an awful 9.6 percent.

27. (30) New York Islanders (10-14-2) — Rick DiPietro got injured the day he signed that big contract with New York. If he plays again this decade, it will be a miracle.

28. (22) Toronto Maple Leafs (9-12-6) — The Leafs have gone 4-9-3 since Nov. 2 and Vesa Toskala is also having a lot of trouble in net, as always.

29. (28) Atlanta Thrashers (9-14-3) — Ilya Kovalchuk is on pace for just 28 goals after scoring 52 last season.

30. (26) Tampa Bay Lightning (6-12-8) — I believe the last power rankings read something like this: “Barry Melrose is going to be back at ESPN pretty quickly if this keeps up” — his new contract with ESPN starts Jan. 1, 2009.
