A late-night fight off campus between two coeds at a frat house turned violent two Saturdays ago when one of the combatants allegedly “clawed” at the other’s eye, tearing her eyelid.
Court documents say Nicole Rosario, a sophomore resident of Newing College’s Broome Hall, “engaged in a physical fight” with the victim, freshman Amanda Guzman of Dickinson College’s Whitney Hall. That’s when she is accused of tearing at the bottom lid of Guzman’s right eye and injuring her cornea, as well as bruising Guzman’s lip delivering several scratches to her forearm. She was eventually treated at Lourdes Hospital on Binghamton’s Riverside Drive.
“We had a couple of altercations in the past,” Guzman told a reporter Monday in her Whitney Hall dorm room, but would not elaborate. “I don’t want to have to retell the story,” she said.
But she appeared to be optimistic about her recovery, and medical Web site WebMD.com says that cornea injuries are usually quick to heal.
The fight took place Saturday, Oct. 21., at a party at 60 Chestnut St. in Binghamton, a residence police described as a fraternity house. Rosario was arrested Oct. 23 at her Broome dorm room and arraigned on charges of assault in the second degree, a felony, the same day. If convicted, she could face up to five years in prison.
“[Rosario] never seemed like a violent person,” said Brienna D’Angelone, a BU sophomore and Rosario’s former Broome Hall roommate. D’Angelone said that Rosario was “a little odd” at times, but always seemed “nice.” She was surprised about the news when first informed by a Pipe Dream reporter.
Rosario could not be reached for comment, and D’Angelone said that she had seen Rosario leaving with her suitcases last week. But the Registrar’s Office wouldn’t say whether Rosario had withdrawn from school, and the office of Residential Life could not be reached for comment.
