The Binghamton men’s and women’s swimming teams were bested by undefeated Cornell at their final home meet of the season, Saturday at the West Gym.

The men’s team was beaten 175-122 by an impressive Cornell squad led by the usual cast of strong swimmers. BU senior David Holmes captured the 100-yard butterfly and set a new team record in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

Senior co-captain Brian Koizim also put in a strong performance for the Bearcats by capturing the 100-yard backstroke. Sophomore Brenno Varanda set the tone for the men by winning both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke.

“I liked the way we attacked the water,” said head coach Sean Clark. “We swam with class.”

The women’s team also faced a disappointing loss, though they were strong on the diving board. Freshman Anne Malvasi captured the one-meter dive, while sophomore Katherine Hassfurter won the three-meter dive.

The women also excelled with sophomore Aleksandra Grubic winning the 100-yard backstroke and Nicole Sweeney earning second in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

“Cornell’s program is a bit ahead of ours, but we stood up and really pushed them to swim faster,” Clark said.

The team also excelled by posting 10 individual best swims.

Currently, the men stand at 2-2, while the women have a record of 1-4. Both the men’s and women’s teams are idle until Jan. 13, when they face-off against Drexel. Though Drexel is not a conference opponent, this may prove to be an important meet with the conference tournament approaching fast.
