In its second game of the season, the Binghamton women’s lacrosse team took on Quinnipiac on Saturday, earning its first win of the season after an opening loss at Ohio State. Kicking off play with a 4-0 run, the Bearcats (1-1) never looked back against the winless Bobcats (0-3), securing an 11-8 victory.

Opening with four consecutive goals, the Bearcats dominated play from the opening draw control. Sophomore midfielder Callon Williams put BU on the board first with an unassisted goal in the game’s opening four minutes followed by a man-up goal from senior attack Alex Fisher off a free-position shot. Winning the ensuing draw control, the Bobcats couldn’t hold on. After a turnover gave the ball back to BU, junior attack Sophia Racciatti put the Bearcats ahead, 3-0.

After a fourth goal by senior midfielder Renee Kiviat, Quinnipiac put up a pair of its own goals to cut BU’s lead to 4-2. But the Bearcats refused to let their opponents claw back. In the final 14 minutes of the first half, BU put up five more unanswered goals to propel its lead to 9-2 headed into the half.

In the second stanza, Quinnipiac came out a changed team holding the goal advantage, 6-2, against Binghamton. After an early goal by Williams, QU answered with three goals in under six minutes, all off of the stick of junior attack Kathleen DeVito. Binghamton stopped the bleeding with its final goal of the day by Fisher to make the score 11-5 in BU’s favor, but the Bobcats didn’t let up, posting three more goals to reduce the deficit, 11-8, with over 13 minutes on the clock.

Refusing to allow the comeback, the Bearcat defense staved off the Bobcats to shut them out in the final 13 minutes of the game. With QU being held to only two shots for the remainder of the contest, junior goalkeeper Erin McNulty played a key role for the BU defense with more than just her eight saves — including two to save the game for Binghamton, 11-8.

“Erin played a solid game between the pipes,” BU head coach Stephanie Allen said according to bubearcats.com. “Her and the defense kept the team in the game, and was able to come up with some big stops when we were a man down, to get the ball back into our hands.”

The Bearcats are scheduled to continue their season against Lafayette College on Wednesday. First draw is set for 4 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
