Moving away from home and into a dorm or off-campus housing is always an adventure. Sometimes that adventure takes you somewhere unpleasant.
As part of an annual tradition, Pipe Dream surveyed Binghamton University students for their worst housing experiences. Their stories did not disappoint. Some responses have been lightly edited for clarity.
“Batman: duty calls”
Over the summer, I was terrorized by a child in a Batman costume who kept ringing my doorbell and hanging around my porch.
“Bad aim”
My sophomore year roommate would leave s–t on the toilet seat.”
“The Twilight Zone”
We didn’t have heat until November and nearly had to move in order to get it. The house was 30 degrees. They have barely ever come to the house to ever fix anything. Everyone we know and would’ve contacted to fix anything had mysteriously quit or run away.
“No Boundaries”
My roommate would watch porn on her giant computer when I was in the room.
“The Dead Bird”
Entered our room first day of our lease to mold, hair, dirt, dust, and broken fixtures. Instead of fixing the problem and owning up to their mistakes they sent two people up to clean only the kitchen, even though the entire unit was disgusting. They told us to email customer service with images to receive a refund, when we emailed them however, there was no response and we were charged a cleaning fee. My whole family spent 4 hours cleaning, along with 2 other families and missed out on their prior commitments.
Later in the year, I noticed a leak in my window. I placed multiple work orders and the leak continued. The leak, was brown liquid which began to damage my personal belongings. Finally, the problem was identified after months of this liquid pouring into my room. The problem? A dead bird had crawled into my ceiling and was blocking the vent which caused the leak. To fix the problem they cut a hole in my ceiling, which the plaster dust was all over my belongings. Further they painted the ceiling again, resulting in paint splatters over my personal items.
UClub also has the worst soundproofing ever. I would hear stomping at all hours of the day, people yelling across halls, and general noise. This was egregious noise that I’ve never heard in the other apartments I’ve stayed in. When I asked about it, they told me there was nothing I could do. I wasn’t sleeping or able to do work in my unit.
UClub is so overpriced for what I had to put up with. Never stay there. Ever.”
“Somethong smelly”
My roommate used to leave her dirty thongs around the room and her side of the room was so incredibly messy for so long and said she couldn’t clean it herself and needed her boyfriend to come over and help her. She would sometimes come home smelling like cigarette smoke and then the whole room would smell like it.
“Mr. Not Clean”
I was living in Mountainview my first year and our cleaning guy regularly would walk into our bathroom, spray some Febreze, check his phone, and leave, if he came at all. This would happen every week, and we sent in complaints. Spring semester, a lady came in to deep clean our bathroom while complaining loudly about our old cleaner and how he needed to be fired. We never saw him again.
“Cabin Fever”
“I lived with Stonebridge…we didn’t have heat for over a month last winter and if anyone recalls it was extremely cold. I literally slept in my puffer and four layers of blankets and I had to wear mittens while I cooked dinner.”
“Diva Landlord”
Our landlord would come into our house and yell my nickname up the stairs (that he came up with), act like we’re best friends, and then give me a panic attack when he doesn’t respond about our clogged sink, broken toilet, missing floorboard on the porch, oh, and the fact that we don’t have a back door… he would also send screenshots of texts with his employees and s–t talk them saying “she always got attitude” (with a rolling eyes emoji) + dual charging us for utilities and then be like “that’s so annoying” as if it isn’t his fault.
When I catch you…Brock…
