On Sunday, the Binghamton men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams took on Cornell for their final meet of the season. Both teams lost their matchups with the men losing 153-90 and the women falling 145-94.

“We expect to get up and race three and a half days in a row,” said Binghamton head coach Jerry Cummiskey. “Being able to race twice this weekend and swim tired and get that feeling of taking care of ourselves was really good preparation for what we’ve got coming up.”

The men’s side broke a pool record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:20.64. Freshman Keegan Chatham, freshman Eli Lanfear, sophomore Liam Murphy and senior Ryan Board were the participants in the race.

“It felt great,” Board said. “Pool records don’t happen that often and for it to be a relay really means a lot.”

The women’s team had success throughout the meet as well. Sophomores Marley Zimmerman and Courtney Moane took gold in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke with times of 1:56.59 and 1:07.43, respectively. Later on, the women won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.13. The relay team included sophomores Zimmerman, Molly Greeley, Maddie Hoover and junior Alyssa Martin.

“They’re capable of getting up and swimming fast at any time,” Cummiskey said. “[I’m] proud of how we competed across the board.”

Both the women’s and men’s teams posted close contests in their last two matchups. The men defeated St. Bonaventure 155-144 and Marist 151-149, and the women lost to the Bonnies 121-177 and the Red Foxes 142-158.

“I think it’s great,” Cummiskey said. “It shows us the value of every place and everybody’s purpose toward our goal. We fully expect to have a strong competition at champs and it to go down to the end so we have to be ready and everyone’s gonna have to be on their A-game.”

During the meet against Marist, freshman diver Jade Liguori qualified for NCAA Zones in the women’s three-meter diving event. Her score, 290.18, was enough to get in and bested the qualifying requirement of 280.00.

“That was awesome,” Cummiskey said. “[Liguori’s] score yesterday was also a school record by 20 points, so the divers are a huge part of what we do here and it’s great to see them continuing to do well.”

BU will take some time off from competition, and the next time they take the pool will be for the America East (AE) Conference Championship. Cummiskey said this time will be crucial for the team’s success coming up in the next few weeks.

“I think we focus on a lot of race prep,” Cummiskey said. “A lot more quality work and a lot more speed work and try to just replicate what we’re gonna do at championships.”

The AE Conference Championship starts on Thursday, Feb. 10 through Sunday, Feb. 13 in Worcester, Massachusetts, with a time to be announced.
