Freshman Eliott Hureau, one of three new faces on the Binghamton University men’s tennis team, excelled in this past weekend’s Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational, a non-scoring event. Hureau advanced all the way to the singles consolation finals before falling to Georgetown University sophomore Shane Korber.

“[Hureau] competed hard and got better from match to match … and that’s what you want to see,” BU head coach Adam Cohen said.

Hureau was one of four players sent by Cohen to compete in Binghamton’s first tournament of the season, held at Princeton University’s Lenz Tennis Center. Freshmen Alexander Maisin and sophomores Aswin Nambi and Robin Lesage also competed. The team faced players from colleges all over the east coast, including the University of Pennsylvania, Boston College and Columbia University.

On his way to the consolation finals, Hureau added two match wins, one over Christian McKean of Boston College (7-5, 6-1) and another over Ramy Labna of Penn State University (6-3, 6-1). Hureau fell to Korber in the finals (6-2, 6-4).

Hureau’s play was the highlight of the weekend, as the rest of BU’s players struggled to find any rhythm. Both Lesage and Nambi failed to record a match win in singles play. Nambi notched the only set win for the two, when he won his first set against Columbia University sophomore Bert Vancura. Maisin won four sets throughout the tournament, but captured just one of his three singles matches. Maisin’s one win came against senior Robert Wong of University of Pennsylvania (3-6, 6-3, 10-8).

The Bearcats struggled in doubles play as well. Maisin and Hureau lost to Georgetown University in the first round of the doubles bracket, 8-5. Lesage and Nambi faired only slightly better, as they won their first match against Yale University 9-7, but lost their second match to Cornell University 8-1.

When asked about his predictions for the team’s future, Cohen was decidedly hopeful.

“I expect us to be right there in the hunt for another America East championship,” Cohen said. “[We’ll] try to get back into national rankings.”

The Bearcats have no games scheduled this upcoming weekend, as Cohen reported that the team will not be traveling to play in the Virginia Plus One Invitational. Instead, the team’s next tournament will be the Penn Invitational, scheduled to take place Sept. 28-30.
