A sprinkler head failed in the Marketplace late on Sunday, creating a massive burst of water that flooded part of the space.

At around 11:50 p.m., the fire alarm went off in the University Union. As students remaining in the building evacuated, large quantities of water sprayed from above the door to the Fireplace Lounge, quickly beginning to leak under.

Binghamton University Police Department officers arrived at the scene shortly after.

A University spokesperson told Pipe Dream that a sprinkler head had failed, causing the incident and resulting in the minor flood of a few University Union rooms. As of 8:30 a.m. Monday, the flooded rooms were nearly completely restored and the building could be fully occupied.

The Student Association is working with University Union Building Administrator Peter Nardone to ensure all areas of the building are fixed and safe to use.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
