The search committee in charge of finding a new director of the Binghamton University Office of Greek Life interviewed another candidate for the position on Monday.

Ronald Shidemantle was the second of three applicants asked to speak to the campus community.

Assistant Dean of Students Milton Chester said Shidemantle had creative ideas for moving BU Greek Life forward, including holding a “signature event” in which all Greek organizations can participate.

“I think they both [the first two candidates] did a wonderful job,” Chester said. “From my perspective, it will be a tough decision.”

Each of the candidates suggested interacting with the Greek organizations that have lost their charters in order to solve the reported hazing problems within those fraternities.

Zach Stein, president of the Interfraternity Council and a member of the search committee, said that attempting to work with unchartered groups would be negatively received by other members of Greek life.

“I don’t think it would go over well,” Stein said. “We already have 18 [fraternities] as it is, and we have our problems.”

However, he said Shidemantle seemed qualified for the position based on his presentation.

“I think that he has the proper qualifications for the job and would do a good job if he got the position,” Stein said.

The search committee will interview the third and final candidate on Oct. 8. They plan to announce their decision shortly after.

“We should have a candidate within the next two weeks,” Stein said.

Candidates go through a series of interviews on campus throughout the day they visit. The interview schedule includes meetings with Dean of Students April Thompson, Vice President for Student Affairs Brian Rose, representatives of Residential Life and Binghamton’s New York State University Police.

Stein said the intensive process is an effective way of testing if a candidate is fit for the director position.

“The interview day is a rigorous process,” Stein said. “There’s a lot they have to do, a lot of people they have to meet with and impress.”
