Contest for student bands

Jam Cruise is teaming up with Sonicbids, inviting up-and-coming artists to submit their music to the Sonicbids/Jam Cruise band contest. Six cabin slots have been reserved for Sonicbids artists. Winners can be a band of any combination of six members. Bands can enter now through Nov. 7, 2006. Winners will join others on the Jam Cruise 5 lineup: The Derek Trucks Band, Umphrey’s McGee, The Greyboy Allstars, Galactic and Burning Spear, among others. Student door contest

Attention Design Students: JELD-WEN Windows and Doors is sponsoring its second annual Student Door Contest. Students are invited to submit original designs for residential front doors, focusing on the theme of “honoring architecture.” Application forms and rules are posted at www.jeld-wen/studentdesign.com. Winners will be selected this November. JELD-WEN will award two grand prize packages, including a $5,000 scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to the next International Builders’ Show. Three finalists will also receive $1,000 scholarships.

Art gallery opening

Lost and Found: Images from Our Industrial Past, an exhibit created by photographer Peg Johnston, will open Friday, Sept. 15, from 5-8 p.m. at the Cooperative Gallery 213, at (surprise!) 213 State St. Lost and Found is a visual exploration of the remains of life in the Triple Cities — the slowly disappearing architecture, the people who once worked in those buildings and the lives they made. The exhibit will remain open to the public through Oct. 8 during regular gallery hours, on First Friday and by appointment.

Antique auction this Saturday

The 1890 House Museum will host its annual antiques auction on Saturday, Sept. 9. The auction features items such as light fixtures, silver plates, glassware, furniture, paintings, a steamer trunk and many other collectibles. Items can be previewed on Friday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. A donation of $15 for non-members/donors is suggested. The Saturday auction starts at 4 p.m. and is free. A Reunion in Recital Concert

Two of Binghamton University’s most renowned “Masters of Music in Opera” alumni — soprano Judy Berry and baritone Timothy LeFebvre — unite for “A Reunion in Recital Concert.” Along with pianist Duane Skrabalak, they will present an evening of duets and arias from the world of opera, operetta and art song. The recital will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 8 p.m. in the Anderson Center Chamber Hall.
