Director of Off Campus College David Husch issued a letter Monday reminding students to take action if their water service is set to be interrupted.
According to the mayor’s office, payment on delinquent bills must be received by 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26 to prevent service interruption. “If payment is not received by then, we will commence termination of service beginning Oct. 1 and proceed systematically through the list. Once water service is terminated, per State Code, our Building and Code Office must immediately deem the property not fit for habitation, and we will hold a hearing on the property within 24 hours. If deemed not fit for habitation, we are required by law to post condemnation notice and require all tenants to leave the premises within 24 hours.”
Landlords seeking to make payment arrangements with the city of Binghamton may do so, as long as the payment is made in full by November. Such arrangements must be made this week, however, to avoid water service being shut off.
To see if your residence is affected, contact your landlord immediately, or visit cityofbinghamton.com/Library/pages/Water%20Shut%20Offs/Water%20Shut%20off%20List%20-%2009152008.pdf.
Husch recommends parents be informed of the situation and that they contact landlords as well.
An attorney from the OCC Legal Clinic will be present at the OCC Office, New University Union room 204 this Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to discuss this issue.
If you have any questions or comments, please contact OCC at (607) 777-2768 or via e-mail at occ@binghamton.edu.
Sincerely,
David Husch, Director
