Five players were released from the men’s basketball team this afternoon, two days after Emanuel “Tiki” Mayben’s arrest and one after his permanent dismissal.

According to reports from The Press & Sun-Bulletin, D.J. Rivera, Malik Alvin, Corey Chandler, Paul Crosby and David Fine were all released today. Coach Kevin Broadus said that he and the players need to be on the same page when it comes to committment, and that their dedication has to hold strong both on the court and off.

“There’s only one captain steering this ship, and that’s me. If any of the young men in our program don’t respect the decisions that have been made or the rules we have in place, then they need to move on with their lives,” Broadus said, according to The Press & Sun-Bulletin. “We’ll play with the student-athletes that want to be here, have respect for the institution, the game and the opportunities that we have provided for them.”

The release of the five players followed strong words from University President Lois DeFleur yesterday.

“I am reiterating to our Athletic Director Joel Thirer and [Bearcats basketball head] coach Kevin Broadus that we will not tolerate this behavior in our student athletes,” she said in an official statement. “This behavior does not reflect the quality of our program and the hundreds of student-athletes at Binghamton University. We appreciate that Coach Broadus has given second chances to athletes, but our program cannot take these risks and I have made this clear to both Thirer and Broadus.”

Last night The New York Times reported that Rivera would miss some time this season because of a broken wrist. The news of the players’ release came less than a day later.
