Binghamton University’s club ultimate Frisbee team went 2-2 to finish last in its pool at The Ultimate Frisbee Upstate New York Sectional Championships in Ithaca this weekend, losing to Albany and Queens-Kingston.
Binghamton’s section included New York schools north of Poughkeepsie and Canadian schools west of Montreal and east of Toronto. Carleton University from Ottawa, Ontario won the section, defeating host Cornell in the finals. The tournament was set up through pool play, with four pools of five teams each. Binghamton was in a pool with Queens-Kingston (Ontario), Albany, Oneonta and Clarkson. Two teams from each pool moved on to tournament play. Albany and Queens-Kingston moved on from Binghamton’s pool but lost in the first round of the tournament.
The games were played according to basic ultimate Frisbee rules. There are seven players on the field for each team. The games are played to 13 and a team must win by two. There is a time cap for most games; the Sectional time cap was 45 minutes, which Binghamton’s loss to Albany reached with Albany leading 9-8. There is a halftime when one team reaches seven points.
Ultimate Frisbee is a club sport at BU and does not have tryouts. Anybody can go play Monday through Friday at the East Fields on campus. There is no experience necessary to practice, but the best play in games. The team usually travels to each tournament with 15 to 20 athletes every semester and there is a tournament at Binghamton every September. Other than the Sectional Championship, the squad most recently traveled to Georgia over spring break.
