At 4 p.m. Tuesday, Binghamton University women’s lacrosse (1-2) looked to give itself a winning record and win its home opener against St. Bonaventure (2-2).

By 6 p.m., heartbreak set in.

After a tight first half in which neither team led by more than a goal, the Bearcats took a 6-5 lead into intermission.

However, the Bonnies began to take control of the game with 21:55 remaining in the second half, taking an 8-6 lead when freshman Danielle Drabin scored after a Binghamton foul. Not giving in to the Bonnies’ run, Binghamton took over the game with four consecutive goals. Sophomore Ali Castiglie, currently second on the team with eight goals, led the Bearcat charge.

With Binghamton down 8-7 with 18:33 left in the game, Castiglie assisted freshman Emily Thon, who had two goals of her own, to knot the game at eight. Castiglie then assisted sophomore Lisa Illig to put her team ahead 9-8, and then scored a goal of her own to give the Bearcats a 10-8 lead. Binghamton head coach Tony Zostant, who previously coached at St. Bonaventure, was pleased with Castiglie’s performance.

“[Castiglie] had a big game for us,” Zostant said. “She did a great job out there.”

Despite being ahead 10-8 with 5:41 remaining in their game, the Bearcats proceeded to surrender three goals in 63 seconds to fall behind 11-10.

The Bonnies would go on to win by that margin. St. Bonaventure’s charge was led by junior Molly Hastrich, who scored the game-tying goal with 5:03 remaining on the game and put her team ahead for good with another goal 25 seconds later. Hastrich led the Bonnies with four goals, adding to her team-leading 14 points on the season. In the last 1:34 of the game, the Bearcats had a chance to tie the game but missed two shots and turned the ball over with 23 seconds left in the game. Binghamton never got the ball back.

“We were trying to get into some different sets and stall the ball a little bit since we were up by two goals,” Zostant said. “We turned the ball over and gave them a chance to score. It’s a tough one because outside of a few minutes we outplayed them.”

While the Bearcats did drop to 1-2 with the loss to the Bonnies, there were some positives that they could take away from the game. Castiglie led Binghamton, but the Bearcats saw six players forge their way into the scoring column. Thon and sophomore Beth Moore had two goals apiece. Sophomore attackers Illig and Kate Tesi, and junior midfielder Lizzie Wright all contributed one goal for the Bearcats.

“We try to spread the wealth a little bit to everybody so it’s not just one person scoring goals,” Zostant said.

On a three-game home stand, the Bearcats play host to the Monmouth Muhawks today at 4 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With a win, Binghamton will level their record on the young season at 2-2.
