April 18, 2001 — Binghamton University completes a five-year transition from NCAA Division III athletics, through Division II and into Division I America East Conference.

April 2004 — Construction completed on a $33.1 million Events Center intended to house, among others, the men’s basketball team.

March 26, 2007 — Kevin Broadus is hired by the University to coach the men’s basketball team after former coach Al Walker steps down. Walker coached the team from 2001 to 2007. Previously, Broadus was an assistant coach at Georgetown University.

May 4, 2008 — Miladin Kovacevic, a recruit made by Walker, assaults BU senior Bryan Steinhauer at the Rathskeller Pub in Downtown Binghamton, leaving him in a coma.

June 6, 2008 — Kovacevic flees the United States to Serbia on an emergency passport from the Serbian Consulate in New York.

July 24, 2008 — Serbian officials release a statement apologizing to the Steinhauer family and say the officials who helped him flee are being dismissed and may face criminal charges, according to the New York Post.

Sept. 17, 2008 — New York State Senators Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton meet with the U.S.’s ambassador to Serbia to press for the release of Kovacevic back to the U.S.

Oct. 28, 2008 — Kovacevic is arrested in Serbia.

Nov. 10, 2008 — Junior Binghamton men’s basketball guard Malik Alvin is arrested for allegedly stealing condoms from the Vestal Wal-Mart and knocking over a 66-year-old woman in the process.

Nov. 28, 2008 — Alvin is reinstated to the men’s basketball team.

Dec. 1, 2008 — Phil Mushnick of the New York Post writes a column questioning BU’s actions toward recruiting Kovacevic for its basketball team.

Jan. 19, 2009 — Senior Binghamton men’s basketball guard Dwayne Jackson is suspended from the team for a violation of team policy.

Feb. 21, 2009 — Pete Thamel of The New York Times writes a story questioning Broadus’ recruiting practices. The article contains quotes from Sally Dear, an adjunct lecturer at BU who complained that the athletics department pressured her to grant athletes exceptions.

March 18, 2009 — Thamel writes another article, this time about Elizabeth Williams, a major gifts officer for BU athletics. Williams alleged “egregious acts of sexual misconduct” by two senior athletic department officials.

Sept. 13, 2009 — Senior men’s basketball guard Emanuel “Tiki” Mayben is arrested on campus for the possession of marijuana during a traffic stop, according to The Press & Sun-Bulletin.

Sept. 23, 2009 — Mayben is arrested in Troy, N.Y. and is charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, two counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance and fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Sept. 24, 2009 — Mayben is dismissed from the team, and BU President Lois DeFleur releases a statement reiterating to Broadus and athletic director Joel Thirer that such behavior will not be tolerated.

Sept. 25, 2009 — Broadus announces that men’s basketball players D.J. Rivera, Malik Alvin, Corey Chandler, Paul Crosby and David Fine are also released from the team. He cites commitment issues.

Sept. 28, 2009 — DeFleur announces in a press conference that Thirer is resigning as athletic director and will be moved to a position in the Office of the Provost to work on undergraduate transfer issues. James Norris, former senior associate athletic director, will serve as interim athletic director.
