Ever since I’ve returned to campus from spring break, I’ve been waking up almost every morning with this immense desire to do absolutely nothing school-related. Urges to write a song instead of a paper suddenly overwhelm me, and there are some days I want to completely deviate from my normal routine.

The weather has been absolutely beautiful — give or take a random snow day and a handful of rainy ones — which just makes it easier and easier to procrastinate without considering the consequences. As one of my friends said, “It feels like a crime to be inside on such a beautiful day … especially in Binghamton.”

It’s been much harder than usual to convince myself to get things done.

Are you feeling restless all the time? What about being extremely lazy and nonchalant about life, even though you know you shouldn’t?

Well then, my friends, it looks like you and I have caught a bad case of spring fever. I’ve been sick from it for a while now. But now that we’ve diagnosed the problem, how do we cure it? Here are some suggestions:

1. Do some of your work outside. Got a lot of reading or writing to do? Spread out a sheet or take a seat on a picnic table and crack open those dusty books. They could always use some fresh air, especially as we get closer to finals week.

2. Spend a day off from indoor distractions. Facebook, YouTube and your TV will still be there when you come back inside — or at least, they should be, granted you lock your door and your roommate doesn’t run off with your TV.

3. Go for a walk in the Nature Preserve. Not too many people have a chance to enjoy the Nature Preserve in their backyard like we do. Take advantage of it! Take a tour or a hike through it and volunteer your services to help prevent erosion in the Nature Preserve on April 24 for the Big Spring Trail Day.

4. Get some good, motivating friends. This is a chance for your friends to boss you around — if they don’t already do so. Set some attainable goals for yourself. Give a copy to a friend and/or your roommate, they can help get you moving on when that wave of laziness washes over you. Warning: Make sure this person is absolutely stubborn and doesn’t consent to making deals with you like, “Just five more minutes” or, “I’ll start after I …”

5. Take a relaxing run or walk at night. If the weather is right, go for it! Invite a friend to go with you. It’s good exercise and can be really relaxing. It can also get you pumped to be productive.

6. Eat a meal outside. Everything tastes better during a picnic.

7. Listen to relaxing music. Maybe while you’re doing some work, Colbie Caillat, Jason Mraz or Jack Johnson can keep you company. Reggae or Hawaiian music could work well, too.

So as we make our way to the end of the year, don’t let spring fever ruin your academic life. Take some of these suggestions or make some of your own, and we’ll be on the road to recovery.
