Two Panhellenic sororities at Binghamton University will co-host a powder-puff football game to raise money for two national philanthropic organizations.
On Sunday, Oct. 18, sororities Alpha Phi and Sigma Delta Tau will be running and participating in the inaugural Powder-puff Football 2009 competition.
At the event, which will take place at Field No. 9 on BU’s campus, located by the the East Gym, all of the six Panhellenic sororities will be participating in a tournament-based football game.
Each sorority will create a team composed of 20 sorority members.
“Two games will be going on at once, each lasting 20 minutes,” said Ashley Krokowski, vice president for Alpha Phi and a junior psychology applied behavior analysis major. “There are six sororities and three rounds of games. There will also be an intermission show.”
In addition to getting the Panhellenic sororities involved, fraternity members of the Interfraternity Council will also be participating by acting as quarterbacks and cheerleaders for the teams of sorority members.
“Each sorority is going to have one member from a certain fraternity be the quarterback of the team, and the rest of the fraternity members will be the team’s cheerleaders,” said Danielle Levy, vice president of Sigma Delta Tau and a junior human development major.
Tickets are $5 if purchased prior to the event and $6 if purchased at the event.
All proceeds from the competition will be divided between Cardiac Aid, which is the national philanthropy of Alpha Phi, and Prevent Child Abuse America, the national philanthropy of Sigma Delta Tau.
According to Krokowski, donations, 50/50 raffles and individual raffles for gift certificates donated by local businesses will help to raise money for the charities, in addition to ticket sales.
“We hope that this will become an annual event and something that each sorority and fraternity will look forward to each year,” Levy said. “We also hope to raise a lot of money for both of the philanthropies because although we do a lot of little fundraising events throughout the year, we’ve been trying to coordinate something big for years.”
Both sororities have been planning to hold a major fundraising event for years, but held off until they could get enough people involved to make a difference.
“We [Alpha Phi] realized it would take a lot of planning so we held off planning the powder-puff game until this year,” Krokowski said. “We asked Sigma Delta Tau to join us in making it a bigger and better event.”
Last year, the two sororities worked together to sponsor Fashion for a Cure, an event that raised money for the Sharsheret Breast Cancer Foundation.
