Two weeks into the NHL season and there have been quite a few surprises. The Buffalo Sabres are red hot and the Red Wings picked up right where they left off. The power rankings tell all that needs to be told.

1. Buffalo Sabres (6-1-2) — While they had a couple of bad games against subpar teams, the Sabres have beaten the Canadiens, the Rangers and the Wild. Plus, Thomas Vanek already has eight goals.

2. Detroit Red Wings (7-1-1) — Too many one-goal games against teams that are in the bottom part of the NHL for the Wings to be number one; other than that, this team is on a roll.

3. San Jose Sharks (8-2-0) — Dan Boyle has made the people of San Jose forget all about losing Brian Campbell to free agency.

4. New York Rangers (9-2-1) — Their only losses have come against teams that they might see in the playoffs, but they are atop the NHL right now.

5. Montreal Canadiens (6-1-1) — Carey Price has forgotten all about last season’s playoffs, holding opponents to just two goals per game.

6. Minnesota Wild (6-1-1) — With the exception of one rough outing, Niklas Backstrom has started the year on fire in net for the Wild who have surrendered the least number of goals in the league with 18.

7. Pittsburgh Penguins (5-3-2) — Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are doing their thing in Pittsburgh with a combined 28 points so far this season.

8. New Jersey Devils (5-2-2) — Martin Brodeur has 543 career wins and is just eight behind Patrick Roy for the most all-time. It’s safe to say he’ll get them this season.

9. Calgary Flames (5-3-1) — After a rough start, Calgary fans thought perhaps the “flames” had gone out, but four straight wins has them thinking otherwise.

10. Washington Capitals (5-3-1) — An “Alex” is leading the NHL in points, but it’s not Alex Ovechkin. Alexander Semin has started the new season with 16 points in nine games.

11. Boston Bruins (5-2-3) — Marc Savard is close to the league-lead in points. But will the Bruins just pick a goalie already?

12. Anaheim Ducks (5-5-0) — After a 1-5 start, the Ducks have now won four straight games and are getting points from their big players Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.

13. St. Louis Blues (5-3-0) — Paul Kariya has 12 points already? Are we back in the mid-’90s?

14. Colorado Avalanche (5-4-0) — Paul Statsny is truly living up to the family legacy as he has helped Colorado off to a very nice start.

15. Carolina Hurricanes (4-2-2) — A good start, but their goal differential is -1. Eventually, the goals against will catch up to them.

16. Chicago Blackhawks (3-3-3) — Worry hit Chicago first this season. Head coach Denis Savard was fired after just a 1-2-1 start. But Patrick Sharp’s 12 points have the Hawks in the right direction.

17. Philadelphia Flyers (3-3-3) — Worry also hit Philly early this season, but with three straight wins, including two over New Jersey, the Flyers are back to where they should be.

18. Edmonton Oilers (4-3-1) — The league’s worst penalty-kill has surrendered a power-play goal in six straight games, including four goals in six opportunities against the Canucks.

19. Nashville Predators (4-4-1) — The Preds are 3-1-0 at home and 1-3-1 away. At least they’re showing that they want to stay in Nashville.

20. Vancouver Canucks (4-5-0) — Vancouver has quickly slipped to the bottom of the very competitive Northwest division. Goalie Roberto Luongo needs to step up his game if the Canucks want to start winning.

21. Ottawa Senators (3-5-1) — The trio of Dany Heatley, Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza have 43 percent of the Senator’s points. But the Sens still don’t have a consistent starting goalie.

22. Toronto Maple Leafs (4-3-3) — They’ve been outscored drastically so far this season, and somehow the Leafs are over .500 … not a bad start for a team that will most likely finish toward the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

23. Dallas Stars (4-4-2) — Perhaps the biggest surprise this season: the Stars have let up a league-worst 40 goals.

24. Florida Panthers (4-4-0) — The Panthers need to give a big “thank you” to Thomas Vokoun for winning a few big games, including a 47-save win against the Sharks.

25. Los Angeles Kings (3-4-1) — The most impressive aspect of the Kings’ arsenal this season is their penalty-kill, which is ranked third so far after finishing dead last a season ago.

26. Tampa Bay Lightning (2-3-3) — Barry Melrose is going to be back at ESPN pretty quickly if this keeps up.

27. Phoenix Coyotes (3-4-0) — The fact that Phoenix has three wins is mind-boggling being that they’ve only scored 15 goals.

28. Atlanta Thrashers (2-5-2) — When you’ve let up at least 30 shots in eight of nine games, there won’t be a lot of winning.

29. Colombus Blue Jackets (3-6) — The Blue Jackets need a goalie … fast.

30. New York Islanders (2-6-0) — Rick DiPietro is 0-2 with a 3.31 goals-against average and a .883 save percentage. At this point, the Isles don’t even want him to return from his injury.
