With so many shows on TV this season based on foreign concepts, the Pipe Dream staff, Matt Roush and Dr. Ryan Vaughan weighed in on some favorites and major bombs.
Kelly O’Connor, managing editor: “Kath & Kim” was terrible. Molly Shannon really needs to stop acting.
Caitlin Sweeny, assistant news editor: I haven’t watched many adaptations. I’m a fan of the original shows like “Dr. Who” and “Secret Diary of a Call Girl.”
Lauren Lusher, assistant copy desk chief: “The Office” is my favorite show. It’s realistic and witty and not over-the-top like a lot of the stuff that’s on TV lately.
Matt Roush, senior critic at TV Guide: In terms of quality of this year’s batch of shows, [“Life On Mars”] is the best we’ve seen thus far. “All in the Family” showed that you can take a thing and make it so American that it becomes an icon that is, I think, the gold standard of taking something and making it new and fresh.
Julie Munn, photo editor: “The Office” — it’s essentially the only show I watch on TV.
Chris Harnick, Release editor: I watched the first episode of “Kath & Kim” and by watched I mean I stared blankly at the screen for a half hour. “The Office” started off really well, but it kind of knows it’s quirky now, but of course I still love it.
Ryan Vaughan, English professor at Binghamton University: It’s hard to knock “All in the Family.” “Coupling” suffered because it got passed around too much like an old hooker. The British “Coupling” was our “Friends.” It was a reaction to “Friends.” Then we took “Coupling” and of course it wasn’t going to work because it started with “Friends.” It went too far, it got passed around one too many times, the same stale idea.
