Binghamton University’s Rory Quiller fell short of the ECAC/IC4A Championship meet record Friday, but still managed to set a personal record and the high mark for the current NCAA indoor track and field season in the pole vault.
Quiller reached a height of 18-6 1/2 at Boston University, taking first place in the pole vault. Pittsburgh’s Ronald Walter finished second at 16 3/4. Quiller attributed his recent success — he set a personal record his last time out, 18-4 1/2, at the U.S. Indoor National Track & Field Championships on Feb. 23, an event also held in Boston — to his health.
“I’ve been healthy, and any sport, if you’re not healthy, it’s not going to happen,” Quiller said. “I had pneumonia over Christmas break, so I’ve spent most of that time since working back.”
Quiller attempted the ECAC/IC4A meet record of 18-8 1/4, which was set in 1991, but fell short.
The Bearcats finished in 15th place with a score of 16. Georgetown won the event with an 86.
Cazal Arnett finished 11th in the men’s 400-meter dash with a time of 48.79 seconds. Seton Hall’s Gregory Gomes won the event in 46.99. Arnett had run exactly a second faster in the preliminaries.
“He ran really well in the prelim and had a rough race in the final,” said Binghamton University head coach Mike Thompson. “He’s disappointed that he didn’t do better in the final, but he has had a phenomenal season. People who are successful get upset like that.”
Binghamton’s Kevin Ralston finished third in the long jump at 23-6 1/2. On the women’s side, Dayna Johnson placed eighth in the triple jump at 39 1/2.
Quiller will jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, hosted by Arkansas on Thursday and Friday. He and Thompson are scheduled to leave on Wednesday. Quiller finished second at the event last year.
