This past weekend the Binghamton University men’s tennis team displayed its tremendous potential. Facing a competitive field at the Cornell Men’s Tennis Invitational, the Bearcats were able to obtain success in both A singles and B singles.
Among the competition was Marist College, Colgate University, Duquesne University, Army, Navy and the host, Cornell University.
The competition kicked off Friday at noon with Binghamton’s own, junior Moshe Levy. Levy overcame Nicolas Pisecky of Marist College and never looked back. He went on to beat five consecutive opponents en route to winning A singles.
“Moshe obviously had a great weekend. The best I’ve seen from him all year. It was encouraging to see him play his best tennis against good competition,” said Binghamton head coach Adam Cohen.
Also competing in the A singles were sophomore Sven Vloedgraven and freshman Gilbert Wong, both of whom played exceptional tennis as well. Vloedgraven won his first two matches in straight sets before losing to Josh Goldstein of Cornell University, who eventually lost to Moshe Levy in the semifinals. Wong won his first match before pushing Jeremy Feldman of Cornell University, who was the runner-up in the competition, to the brink and coming up just short.
In B singles, Binghamton sent out freshman Ted Chakos along with Gilbert Wong, who was forced in due to some injury troubles. Chakos unfortunately dropped his only match. Wong, however, motivated by his set back on Friday in the A singles, was able to reel off four consecutive wins, ultimately winning B singles.
Coach Cohen seemed very upbeat about his team’s performance, saying, “I’m sure everyone’s feeling good about the way we played and about our team as a whole.”
The team will resume play in the spring season on Jan. 31, at Villanova.
