In a followup to their win over last place Stony Brook, Binghamton University’s men’s soccer team (10-4-3, 5-2 AE) will take on second-to-last place University of Maine (4-9-2, 1-5-1 AE).
Although the last time these two teams played against each other in 2007 the Bearcats won 5-0 at the Bearcats Sports Complex, Binghamton must take the game seriously. The Bearcats find themselves ranked third in the America East Conference, something they are not used to at the end of the season.
In the past, Binghamton has gone into the America East tournament as the No. 1 seed. Boston University and Albany, the two teams that are ranked higher than the Bearcats, each play on Sunday — the Terriers against Hartford and the Great Danes against Vermont. This may be the first time in a long time where Bearcats fans will be cheering for the Catamounts.
The Bearcats will be expected to keep the ball out of the net as their defense is currently ranked seventh in the nation for total defense.
Goalkeeper Jason Stenta is letting nothing go past him as he is ranked sixth in the nation in save percentage with .900. This spells bad news for Maine as it has only put 11 goals in this season, whereas Binghamton has scored 19. Furthermore, Stenta has recorded 10 shutouts on the year making the point even greater that the Black Bears will have trouble finding the back of the net.
The Bearcat seniors will especially be on their toes as the outcome to this game can affect their role in their last AE conference tournament ever. Seniors like leading scorer Cameron Keith and assists leader Darren McAllister have never had the honor of winning the conference tournament and they are sure to do everything they can to bring the game to Binghamton.
Kickoff is set for Sunday at Alumni Field at 1 p.m.
