The highly anticipated wait for the new Dave Matthews Band album is nearing an end as the June 2 release date approaches.
The album, titled “Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King,” is the band’s first studio album since 2005’s “Stand Up” and is a tribute to the band’s former saxophonist and founding member, LeRoi Moore, who passed away last August. Members of the band referred to him as “Groogrux King,” or “Grux” for short.
With a slightly new sound and thought-provoking and relatable lyrics, fans got a taste of the album’s feel when the band made their first single, “Funny the Way It Is” available as a free download from their Web site on April 14. Their distinctive, multi-instrument sound is present in this single, and although it is different from their old music, fans are confirming their loyalty by expressing their love for the song.
Although the song has been receiving mixed reviews because the sound is new and diverse, most Binghamton University fans said that they enjoyed “Funny the Way It Is” from the moment they heard it. Kristen Rudkoski, a sophomore biology major, said she has faith that the album will do well.
“It has a slightly different sound from their old stuff, but I actually really like it,” Rudkoski said.
Supporters are fascinated by the upcoming album and its crisp new sound, but after waiting so long for a new album, some fans are unenthusiastic about their latest single and fear for the success of the album.
Christina Smith, a junior mathematics major, said it did not really sound much different or special and she disagreed with the lyrics.
“I don’t think it’s funny at all, more like crazy the way it is,” Smith said.
Mike Boccio, a sophomore accounting major, said there’s nothing really exciting about the new song.
“It reminds me of a vanilla milkshake, very plain,” Boccio said.
