Local residents are waiting longer than expected for the results of the fall 2009 Binghamton mayoral election.
The election, which took place on Tuesday, was too close for a winner to be named.
With 100 percent of districts reporting, according to the Press & Sun-Bulletin, Democratic candidate Matthew Ryan led with 3,789 votes, while Republican candidate Rich David trailed with 3,733. Independent candidate Douglas Walter Drazen received 1,980 votes.
On Thursday, the Press & Sun-Bulletin reported a voting error in the city’s 28th district, where over 100 votes were double-counted. The totals showed that 507 people had voted in the district which only has 310 registered voters.
The error possibly occurred since districts 27, 28 and 29 all poll in the same location.
Karen Davis, a deputy elections commissioner, said in the report that the cause of the error may be related to the vote totals of districts 26 and 27 being added onto the total of district 28. The new mayoral vote totals will remain unofficial until reviewed by the board of elections.
According to the report, the election will be decided on Nov. 12, when over 500 absentee ballots are counted.
