“Lost” fans know a thing or two about gasping while watching television. Flashbacks, flash-forwards, half-siblings, smoke monsters, polar bears … the list of shocking developments over the past four seasons goes on. Now, just a few episodes into the fifth season, the gasp-inducing revelations are more in-your-face than Hurely’s sweat. We know “Lost” can be a difficult show to keep up with, and because we’re all pretty big nerds, Release has compiled what we think were the most shocking moments of this season, complete with a gasp-meter, and mysteries we want answered. (Spoiler warning for the first five episodes of “Lost” season five).

Jin is alive.

Producers said Daniel Dae Kim would be back on the show at some point, but who knew it would be as a living, breathing, time traveling sun-chapped-Jin? His reappearance on the island kind of undercuts Sun’s (Yunjin Kim) emotional reaction to his “death” at the end of season four, which, in my opinion, should’ve garnered an Emmy nomination.

Gasps: 3.5/5

“My name is Danielle, Danielle Rousseau.”

Forget Jin being alive. I was more interested in these attractive French people. I loved the character of Rousseau and was sad to see her go with such a lame death in the fourth season. Although it isn’t actress Mira Furlan portraying the young Rousseau, I still was shocked when she introduced herself to Jin. I yelled so loud my housemate a floor above me heard and said I sounded like a caged animal.

Faraday’s mama!

So that creepy old woman from Desmond’s (Henry Ian Cusick) episode, “Flashes Before Your Eyes,” wasn’t a totally irrelevant character! Ms. Hawking is Faraday’s (Jeremy Davies) mom and she is going to get the Oceanic Six back to the island somehow … but up until then she’s chilling in a church? Neat.

Gasps: 2/5

“Did you say Widmore? As in Charles Widmore?”

I was pretty bored with the entire third episode until this happened. The scientist characters are by far my least favorite characters so whole episodes about them are low on my list of enjoyable things, but this revelation, right at the close of ”Jughead,” redeemed everything. The fact that Widmore was previously on the island gives a whole new depth to his part in the series’ mythology and was something I totally did not see coming.

Gasps: 5/5

Peeping Sawyer.

This wasn’t as much a shocking revelation as it was heartbreaking. Sawyer has taken on the role of the support system while all this time travel has been happening and seeing Kate (Evangeline Lilly) deliver Claire’s baby showed a huge chink in his armor. It was nice to see Claire (Emilie de Ravin) again, but the most touching part was Josh Holloway’s acting during that scene.

Gasps: 2/5

Charlotte grew up on the island! Charlotte is dead!

“Daniel, I think that man was you” — Charlotte (Rebecca Mader)

I was sad to see Charlotte gone so soon; I was just beginning to warm up to the freighter crew. What really shocked me wasn’t Charlotte’s death, but when she revealed to Daniel that he was the one who warned her not to come back to the island. — Louie Ip

Neil gets impaled by flaming arrow.

Neil, or Frogurt (Sean Whalen), was the new Arzt: a character only introduced to die. Plain and simple. Least shocking moment so far; at least Arzt blew up.

Mysteries we want answered:

Where is Rose?

While my main concern is for the sassiest character on “Lost,” Rose (L. Scott Caldwell), I’m still wondering what is happening to everybody else who survived the crash of Oceanic 815. Are they just calmly sitting by the river? Are they traveling through time and meeting characters like Rousseau and witnessing other important “Lost” events? Were they killed by all those flying arrows? Will I ever hear Rose say “Bernard …” in her nasally, loving-with-a-hint-of-annoyance tone?

What happened to Claire?

She got all creepy at the end of season four, ditched her son on a leaf and started hanging out with her dead (?) father in a cabin, yet nobody finds the fact she’s missing alarming.

What was the four-toed statue about?

It’s only been glimpsed once but answers have been promised. Perhaps it has something to do with the temple the black smoke monster was guarding?

Who was chasing Juliet, Locke and co. on those boats?

Indian airlines? Guns? Boats? Please tell us more.
