Whether you’ve fallen into procrastination mode or just have no idea what to get your significant other, the calendar will read Feb. 14 before you know it. And if this reminder causes a panic, there’s no need to worry — Release is here to help.
1. Flowers
Although Valentine’s Day is typically associated with a bouquet of 12 red roses, allow yourself the freedom to change it up a bit. Mix the traditional red roses with ones of other colors, such as white or pink. Breeds of flowers, including lilies and tulips, can be combined with roses for a truly unique look.
Stunning flowers with a vibrant array of colors can be found from online retailers, such as ProFlowers. Bouquets can be found for as little as $19.99 each and include ideas unlike any other. A romantic gift sure to stand out in her mind is the “Lucky in Love Heart Bamboo,” which is a bamboo plant in the shape of a heart. The deluxe version is also available, including a panda bear stuffed animal and fortune cookies.
Beautiful flower arrangements can also be found locally at John’s Flower Market, owned by Binghamton local Bob Sloma and located at 199 Main St. in Downtown Binghamton.
Aside from roses, popular flower breeds for the holiday include carnations, hibiscus, daffodils and irises. The flowers can be arranged any way you like, and they can last from two to three months. And there’s even better news: The shop is opened the weekend of Valentine’s Day, with prices as low as $25 for a bouquet. Requests are filled the same day they are ordered, and delivered at around midday.
John’s Flower Market will even deliver to a restaurant, so when a couple goes out for dinner, the flower arrangement is waiting at the dinner table.
“It’s in a place where everyone can see it, and the romantic aspect is very nice. It adds to the ambiance, and makes a romantic setting for dinner,” Sloma said.
2. Chocolate-covered strawberries
Chocolate-covered strawberries are affordable, delicious and quick to make. All you need is a quick trip to Wegmans to pick up some strawberries and chocolate used for melting. Although milk chocolate is the flavor most commonly used, dark and white chocolates taste just as good.
Melt the chocolate in a pot over the oven, and place the dipped strawberries on a cookie sheet or wax paper. To make the dessert more decorative, add zigzags of white chocolate on milk chocolate-covered strawberries. Nuts, chocolate chips and coconut can be added to the strawberries to make them seem even fancier.
3. Love coupons
Love coupons are a quickly made option that also shows you care about your significant other, especially because you can write all your thoughtful ideas on paper and bind them all together in a small book. Even a simple idea like a back massage or a spooning session can be made colorful and decorated with drawings.
4. A memory box
Homemade and creative gifts are exceptionally valued by the receiver and will be treasured for years to come.
Memories and special items can easily be placed in a shadow box. Also known as a “memory box,” it is a showcase with a glass door that allows you to place unique and cherished objects on the inside.
Shadow boxes leave lots of room for creativity, so let your imagination run free. Place items such as pictures, movie tickets from a date or song lyrics into your box — the possibilities are endless. Shadow boxes are available at arts and craft stores, like A.C. Moore, for $25.
Embellishments like ribbons with prints, crystal stickers and buttons in different shapes can be bought at prices under $7. Picture frames can also be decorated with similar items, including colored foam letters.
5. Homemade dinner
They say the fastest way to someone’s heart is through food, but even faster is making the food yourself. Even if the meal is super simple, like pasta and Alfredo sauce, it will be sure to win some brownie points. Add some candles and a bottle of wine for extra effect (preferably from a bottle, not a box).
