This weekend, certain members of the Student Association E-board delivered a fiasco of truly disastrous proportions.
They promised us a new SA, and a departure from the embarrassment and childishness of previous years. They campaigned on this stance and asked students to give them a chance, and we did.
Instead, only two months into the school year, they’ve managed the truly impressive feat of reaching and surpassing the idiocy of last year’s SA.
Last weekend, student representatives of 64 SUNY campuses gathered at the Binghamton Holiday Inn Arena to listen to the SUNY chancellor speak, discuss the most recent budget cuts and decide how students should combat them (see Page 1). While a majority of students came to the business portion of the meeting dressed in business casual attire, our representatives showed up in jeans. Some two hours after the chancellor’s speech, they proceeded to buy beer at the hotel bar and bring it back to the meeting.
From there, other representatives passed a motion to have BU’s delegates removed.
As if they hadn’t embarrassed us enough, the delegates also stood by earlier that day while an undergraduate student posed as a representative of the Graduate Student Union to get more votes for Binghamton University.
It was poor judgment to say the absolute least, and the timing couldn’t be worse.
These actions are making this University into even more of a circus than it already is. How can we expect to be taken seriously, whether it be in speaking to the administration or writing letters to Gov. Paterson, when our representatives demonstrate such immaturity with such nerve? And furthermore, how much longer will this be allowed to continue before someone steps in and we become another one of those schools whose student government and groups have their every move watched by a faculty adviser?
The days of excuses and apologies are over. If we don’t give these delinquents we call our representatives the punishment they deserve then this is guaranteed continue to go on, and who knows … Perhaps the next time the school administration may be the ones calling the shots. This is more than disgusting. It is despicable.
The student representatives were formally censured at the SA meeting Monday, but they should get something more than a slap on the wrist. This isn’t something that can be swept under the rug — there should be serious consequences for such a grievous error in judgment from the very people we elected to represent us, especially as it occurred at a meeting so crucial to the interests of the students.
Whether it be impeachment or a deeper investigation into how seriously those delegates are taking their responsibilities, further action needs to be taken. We elected these people, and it’s within our rights to replace them if necessary.
At the beginning of the semester, the SA signed a code of conduct to maintain respectful relations amongst themselves and set a certain standard. We said then that we weren’t entirely convinced, and we were right. This year’s SA may make good speeches and promises, but when it comes down to it, their motions don’t translate into action.
What more do we have to look forward to this year if something isn’t done now?
